Perfumes or How to Wear a Scent That Suits You

Perfumes or How to Wear a Scent That Suits You
By Michael Rad

Choosing a perfume is not that easy as one might think it is. You cannot simply choose a perfume that is being advertised or a perfume that your friend wears and wear it. It might not be the thing you need. A good perfume for you is the one that matches your personality and compliments your personal scent. Did you know that a perfume feels differently on different people? For instance, a perfume that feels nice on a person, might feel awful on another, as it mixes with the natural scent of each person giving a unique combination of scent, individual to each.

When it comes to choosing a perfume you have a great deal of aromas to contemplate: Floral, Oriental, Chypre, Green Marine, oriental and Fruit. These are combined and each perfume manufacturer adds some secret ingredients that make the perfume long lasting. The perfume has a concentration of alcohol that makes the scent last plus around 25% of essential oils. The perfumes also contain a fixative and the main ingredients which may be diverse plants: bay leaf, cardamom, eucalyptus, frankincense, geranium, iris, jasmine, lavender, lemon, lily, orange, patchouli, pine, raspberry, rose, sandalwood, vanilla, violet and ylang-ylang, bergamot, cedar wood, gardenia, magnolia and others. There are also animal scents used in the combination. These may be: male musk deer, ambergris, civet etc. However, when picking out a perfume these components should not be essential.

An important point is to feel the scent on your skin. Applying a bit of perfume on the back of your wrist and waiting for a few minutes will give you the first level of scent. If you like it, this is a good thing. Then, wait for half a day and see the mid level of scents, at the end of the day, you will be able to feel the core components of the perfume, so if you still like it, this means that you have found the right perfume for you. Don't buy the perfume without having worn it for one day beforehand.

Also, a good smelling perfume is not suitable for all occasions: you have to have at least two perfumes: one for casual use and one for evenings and special events. Casual perfumes for every day use are usually fresh perfumes, while evening perfumes contain floral scents and are heavier. And don't forget to check out the offer from the numerous perfume producers: Kenzo, Calvin Klein, Channel, Christian Lacroix, Guerlain, Lancome, Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Estee Lauder, Cacharel and lots others.

An Inside to Perfume

An Inside to Perfume

“perfume” derives from the Latin words per and fumus - meaning “through smoke”. The Egyptians were the first to incorporate perfume into their culture followed by the ancient Chinese and Hindus, the use of perfume then spread to Greece, Rome, and the Islamic world.

Introduction The word “perfume” derives from the Latin words per and fumus - meaning “through smoke”, which refers to man’s early ritual of releasing pleasing or masking odours into the air by burning or heating fragrant materials. Throughout the years we have evolved from releasing the fragrances into the air, to wearing them on our person in various forms.

Scents Fragrances are classified according to the concentration of scent within the fragrance. Those fragrances with a higher concentration of scent (essential oils) have a higher intensity/longevity, which explains the dramatic differences in price between an eau de cologne and Perfume extract. Perfume extract: 20-40% essential oils. Eau de parfum (EDP): 10-30% essential oils. Eau de toilette (EDT): 5-20% essential oils. Eau de cologne (EDC): 2-5% essential oils.

Fragrances are often classified as belong to a particular “family”. The following is a breakdown of traditional perfume family classifications, followed by some newer ones which have emerged in more recent years: Amber: A vanilla basis with floral & wood scents. Chypre: Fragrances containing undertones of patchouli, bergamot, oakmoss etcetera. Single Floral: These fragrances are dominated by the scent of one particular flower. Floral Bouquet: Scents containing combinations of two or more flowers. Fougère: Scents with an underlying base of lavender, oakmoss and coumarin, providing a “herbaceous” woody fragrance. Leather: These fragrances have the underlying scents of wood, tobacco and honey, suggestive of real “leather”. Woody: These fragrances feature the scents of sandalwood, cedar, patchouli. Citrus: A predominantly citrus-based scent. Bright Floral: Combination of Single Floral and Floral Bouquet. Green: A less heavy version of Chypre scents. Gourmand: A scent which resembles particular food flavours including vanilla bean, strawberry. Oceanic/Ozone: A fresh, light, clean scent, used in many scents available for him/her.

Along with the above scents, each perfume also contains three individual notes, which are detailed in the order in which they are appreciated: Top (or Head) Notes: The initial impression given by a fragrance immediately after application. This evaporates after a few minutes and is no longer noticeable. Middle (Heart) Notes: The second-stage scent which appears once the head notes fade, and the fragrance blends with the body’s own chemistry (and the reason why perfumes smell different on different people). This takes between 10-20 minutes to develop and lasts for several hours. Base Notes: The remaining, lingering scent which remains once the perfume has dried, after the middle notes also fade. This is the lasting, staying power of the fragrance.

Conclusion When buying a perfume, it is important to consider what occasion it is to be worn for, and choose from an appropriate “family”. Some of the lighter citrus or oceanic scents are perfect for summer days, whilst a heavier floral bouquet is more fitting for a winter’s evening. Most importantly, when testing a new fragrance prior to purchase you must take into consideration the three notes outlined above before placing your order with PerfumEssentials.com.

An Introduction To Perfumes And Colognes

An Introduction To Perfumes And Colognes

The word perfume is from a Latin phrase meaning “through smoke” and was thought to have been invented by the ancient Egyptians who burned fragrant woods and plants for their pleasant odors. Over the years perfume has been used, refined and enhanced by every major civilization and today perfume as we know it is a very big business.

Today’s modern perfume has three main components:

The scent – Virtually anything natural or synthetic that has an odor can be used in the making of perfume. Typically scents are made from flowers, citrus, spices, woods and sometimes even leather.

The fixative – These ingredients act to stabilize the aromatic compound and help to make the scent last longer.

The solvent – This is usually alcohol and keeps bacteria from forming and helps maintain an even consistency so it can be easily applied.

The category a fragrance belongs to is defined by how much of the scent (or aromatic compound) is used in the product. This also plays a factor in determining the price as the higher the concentration of scent the more expensive the fragrance will be:

Lotions and aftershaves generally have a 1 to 2% scent base

Eau de Cologne products are generally 2 to 3% pure scent

Eau de Toilettes run between 5 to 20% scent

Eau de Parfums will have from 10 to 30% aromatic compound in them

Perfume Extract or Parfum has the greatest concentration of scent, between 20 and 40%

Women’s products are usually categorized as perfume, eau de parfum, toilet water, and cologne and for men’s products are sold as perfume, cologne, and aftershave.

Surprisingly fragrances and music share a common term, notes. Perfumes are often described by the different “notes” that make up the scent. These notes are designed to emerge at different times during the scent span of a fragrance just as an orchestra will have different instruments playing throughout a musical composition.

Top Notes are the strongest scents but do not last very long. This is the initial burst of smell you get when you first take a sniff of your favorite perfume or cologne. The top notes are often spice or citrus based.

Middle (or heart notes) makes up the main part of the scent that emerges after the top notes start to fade away and are usually softer and mellower than the initial scent. These scents are usually floral in nature.

Bass notes form the foundation of the scent and are usually deep and musky in nature and emerge to blend with the middle notes not to replace them.

Fragrances are very complex products that go through many stages of development before reaching the consumer. There are tens of thousands of different perfumes and colognes available today, each one having its own unique scent signature and what once was reserved for the wealthy and privileged is now available to everyone.

What Is The Best Cologne ?

What Is The Best Cologne ?
Submitted By: James Brown

When it comes to purchasing cologne for men it is best to buy cologne to match their personality. Men should wear masculine cologne, not perfume for women. If you want to build your self esteem or be more self confident then wear the right cologne.

There are many colognes for men to choose from . Some of the most preferred are the :

ACQUA DI GIO -this is preferred for guys in high school. You are sure to get your girl's attention wearing this cologne.

Cool Water -is popular with high school guys . This may bring back special memories that you and your girl shared together.

Green Irish Tweed - is popular among celebrities.

If you are shopping for seasonal cologne , it is available too.

During the summer men prefer to wear to wear MULGER COLOGNE. This is a cologne gives men a clean fresh smell like the smell of their popular soap. Women prefer men to smell very clean.

Wearing ISSEY MIYAKE is nice to wear on summer nights.

Some cologne smells so good on men that their wives or girl friends won't let their men wear it out if they're not with them. This means it could attract roaming beast. Try VERY IRRESISTIBLE. The name delivers a clear message.

Men used to wear OLD SPICE . Now they have a new spicy cologne called OPIUM. This cologne is for the men that have to rise early and need a quick awakening.

Women love for their men to smell very masculine. Why not try HABIT ROUGE ? This will spark the fire to burning again. It is very nice to wear for professional occasions too.

When you stop and think about cologne , you will find that women either hate the cologne or they love it . Men should be aware when choosing cologne it really comes down to their personal opinion.

Take some real important advice. If you must wear cologne , wear it sparingly. Don't send people running to get away from you. No one wants to have the taste of cologne lingering in their mouths and nose all day. It is very bad when someone wears so much cologne until you can taste it in your mouth. Respect other people, and limit your cologne usage. With the cost of cologne , it pays to know how to wear it. Remember to store your cologne properly to secure the fragrance. Prevent your expensive cologne from souring.

Where Can I Buy Mens Cologne And Not Spend A Fortune Shopping For It?

Where Can I Buy Mens Cologne And Not Spend A Fortune Shopping For It?

Have you ever had to buy mens Cologne for your Boyfriend, father or brother? It can be a rough task for the not so everyday shopper. When buying mens cologne you have a fifty fifty chance of him liking or disliking the cologne. Remember cologne smells different on every skin type. You just have to be lucky enough to select the right one.

The first step is to distinguish the mens cologne from the womans cologne because all the boxes look pretty much the same and sometimes smell the same as well. The obvious thing to do is look for the cologne for men sign or look for a representative to help you sample some cologne. Most stores have a wide variety of mens cologne that has a tester bottle where you can actually test what some of the colognes smell like.

Another hint is to look for the discount cologne sign. This will help you save a couple dollars so that if you are having a tough time picking one out of two colognes that you like, you can purchase another cologne with some of the money you have saved. Some online drugstores sell a wide variety of named brand mens colognes and at a better price.

Some online drugstores even offer free shipping with your purchase. The trick is finding the right online drugstore that has what price is right for you.

Sometimes the sales representative may ask you to sniff a jar of coffee beans.

Don’t get excited this is just to refresh your senses so that the mens colognes will smell different to you. If you do not do this then all the colognes will smell no different and impair your decision. You don’t want to buy a certain cologne and then have it smell totally different from what you expected. They may spell bad but at least you can smell the difference between the colognes you will be buying.

Once you find which mens cologne you like ask the representative if there is any gift baskets or any combinations the manufacturer may be offering if you buy that certain mens cologne. Sometimes if you buy one bottle of cologne for $50 there may be a gift set that offers the same bottle but also offers some after shave or even some soap that is still the same price if not less.

There are many different mens colognes out on the market today. Some smell exactly the same as another one but then there are other mens colognes that have a certain smell that stands out. These are the ones you want to focus on because the smell is different and it may be a new smell that not many people have smelled before.
You know you have picked the right cologne when the person who the cologne is for gets asked questions or compliments saying “wow what kind of mens cologne is that you are wearing?” If this is the case then you come out smelling like a rose.

The Perfect Men’s Cologne for Him!

I'm going to provide you with information on everything that you needed to know about quality men’s cologne in the following article. So, do read the article with attention.

Men’s cologne has always played an important role in the history of perfumes throughout the centuries. The fact is that the use of fragrance as it is today is widespread throughout many different countries worldwide. The modern men’s cologne that you may happen to buy today provides a rich, and aromatic scent concentrated in one, stylish and relatively small bottle.

The most common fragrances of men’s cologne around today are rose lavender with other flowers such as iris, orchids and jasmines.

So, do you still think that you know everything that was to be known about men’s cologne? Don’t you feel that there were so many things that were to be known still?

Furthermore, we have to thank to that special secretion obtained by the male elk if we can enjoy that particular scent of men’s cologne. Musk is the name of the secretion and is also the most expensive and prized ingredient.

Unfortunately, the price for even a small portion of natural musk is very high, but modern scientists have identified the molecular structure of pure musk oil and can now artificially create his proven secretion at a price that is relatively cheap.

So to summarize I can say that the exciting, powering scent that “invades” the air as soon as a man uses men’s cologne, is the enchanting result of a mix of secretions and spices used ranging from cinnamon, ginger and even pepper.

One can find several different men’s colognes in stores which are rich in scent and power, and the wide variety to choose from is so abundant that surely every man can find the product that best matches his personality and skin type, but bear in mind that very often the right and definite choice arrives only after numerous “tests.

In any case a good guideline to follow is to apply the fragrance on the skin smoothly, with a massage, so that rubbing will make the alcohol evaporate, thus losing the scent all around.

In conclusion, a great quality men’s cologne, represents your personalty, it talks about you and for sure people will remember the empowering scent of a beautiful men’s cologne for a long time.

That was all about men’s cologne and I sincerely hope that you must have gained by this article on men’s cologne.

How To Choose The Right Cologne For Yourself?

How To Choose The Right Cologne For Yourself?
Submitted By: June Mala

It is everyone’s dream to smell pleasant on all occasions. Body odor is considered to have a very negative impact on one’s personality. Imagine going to a party with body stinking with sweat. No one would even feel like coming close to you.

Moreover it is considered to be very bad manners to go to any place with body or mouth emitting foul smell. It also becomes detrimental in any one’s success for no one would even feel like coming close to such a person, leave aside getting involved with him in any professional relation.

One sure way of defeating this menace of body odor is by using men’s cologne. However one should exercise great caution before one starts using men’s colognes. One must always be very particular about which cologne one actually wants to use.

If proper care is not taken while selecting the colognes it would merely be wastage of money, and the whole idea of using the colognes would come a cropper. One should not forget that appearance of a person lasts very long, one might forget one’s name but the appearance and personality of any person is remembered for along time.

Though cologne is so very important for everyone it is very sad to see that people don’t think much while purchasing colognes. Mostly colognes are purchased on the basis of its price, the shape of the bottle or on its smell.

Shopping for men’s colognes can actually be very easy. First find out what kind of people the cologne is targeted at. This would give a very clear picture whether you fall in that category and therefore would buy it or not. The companies market their products to the type of customers it is designed for. Therefore if one is looking for a particular thing in any particular brand of cologne the advertisements of the colognes would help him in deciding whether he should go for it or not.

One would be surprised to know that colognes actually have three different scents. It is wholly possible that one selects cologne on the basis of first scent only. This first scent is sharp, fresh and is suppose to grab attention.

After a few moments when the first scent has evaporated the main scent comes through, one probably does not notice it because one has himself applied it, but after about ten minutes to an hour from the initial scent this scent smoothes out and gives the biggest impression. After the main scent has evaporated, the remaining scent is known as base note. This is subtle, lingering scent and is mostly richer or deeper than the initial scent.

Purchasing men’s colognes can be a great fun, though it can also be a tough exercise because of the number of products available. Buying the cologne on the basis of first impression is not a bad idea as one himself has to use it. However since others are also affected by it one must try the abovementioned tests before buying it.

Pheromone Cologne

Does pheromone cologne really work? Do a search on pheromones on the internet and you will soon find yourself literally bombarded with ads for perfumes and colognes claiming they are made with real human pheromones and will make you downright irresistible to the opposite (or even the same) sex. Is this just the snake oil of the 21st century?

Most pheromone cologne sites come with testimonials from real users and, even better, headlines from such established news entities as CNN and Time Magazine. Make no mistake, these headlines are real, from actual stories covering scientific research that has concluded the existence of human pheromones. But much like a movie review that takes a quote out of context to make it seem like the reviewer raved about the movie when he actually panned it, these headlines and excerpts don’t tell the whole story.

Yes, evidence suggests that human pheromones are for real. And yes, some participants in studies have claimed that using pheromone cologne has increased their sexual attractiveness. But that doesn’t by any means guarantee that these things are for real. In the first place, unless the person doing the testimonial is someone who has never attracted another human being in his or her life and now attracts them only when using the cologne, there could be any number of reasons why someone finds them attractive. In fact, it very well could be something as simple as an increase in confidence due to the confidence that the pheremone cologne will actually work.

Self-confidence is better than any bottled cologne or perfume, whether it is a pheromone cologne or not. A person who enters a crowded room sure of himself or herself will immediately be recognized and singled out. Even the most beautiful girl or handsome man can disappear if he or she is experiencing problems with self-esteem.

It would be terrific if all it took to make oneself attractive to the opposite sex was a cologne. Which brings up the really big problem with the whole concept of pheromone cologne. The makers of these things promise that they are made with actual sex hormones. Well, if you are a human being, guess what? You are already producing the hormones being used in these colognes. And since there is no guarantee that the bottled hormones are going to be any more effective than the ones you were born with, why pay for it?

The very fact that so many pheromone colognes are on the market points to a problem with their claims. After all, if everybody was buying their products, wouldn’t the average nightclub become a scene of sexual frenzy and confusion? In the animal kingdom, pheromones are used sexually to entice potential mates. Evolution tells us that those with the most effective scents have successfully propagated while those with less strong scents have died off. Hence, pheromones should be just as individualized as faces. A one size fits all approach doesn’t work with other methods of sexual attractiveness, why should it work with pheromones? Pheromone cologne probably won’t hurt, and it might even help with your confidence. But don’t expect miracles.

Is it Perfume or Poison?

Is it Perfume or Poison?

Here's the scenario: you are on an elevator. The elevator stops and in walks someone with WAY too much cologne on and the smell overpowers you. Your sinuses start to hurt and you get a bit sick to your stomach. The smell of the cologne stays with you, in your hair, clothes and nose for quite a while after - hence the sick feeling does too. Yuk. It's hard not to think how inconsiderate this person is.

It's not just the smell that is inconsiderate. Have you ever thought about the chemicals that are used in fragrances? Many of them are not good for you to breathe or to put on your body!

This week Time Magazine did an article on air fresheners and how many brands have been removed from the market due to high levels of phthalates. Phthalates are estrogenic in nature, which is believed to contribute to certain cancers. Phthalates are used to dissolve and carry fragrances and soften plastics, sealants and similar compounds. They are commonly found in cosmetics, paint, nail polish and plastics.

This peaked my interest on fragrances in general - so, as usual, I did some research. Although fragrances have been used for centuries, they were made from plant and animal sources. Modern fragrances are primarily synthetic materials developed since World War II.

Did you know that 600 or more chemicals may be used in a single fragrance, and 95% of chemicals used in them are derived from petroleum? Why? Petro-chemicals in perfumes are less expensive and more easily available than the natural ingredients.

Many chemicals used in fragrances are considered hazardous waste disposal chemicals! Synthetic fragrance compounds accumulate in human tissue and are found in breast milk.

An EPA study in 1991 listed the 20 most common chemicals used in "fragrance products" which are used not only in perfumes but to scent shampoos, soaps, deodorants, lotions, creams and other beauty products. Here's the list - it speaks volumes on its own:

ACETONE, BENZALDEHYDE, BENZYL, BENZYL ALCOHOL, CAMPHOR, ETHANOL, ETHYL ACETATE, LIMONENE, LINALOOL, METHYLENE CHLORIDE, a-PINENE, g-TERPINENE, a-TERPINEOL, 1,8-CINEOLE, b-CITRONELLOL, b-MYRCENE, NEROL, OCIMENE, b-PHENETHYL ALCOHOL, a-TERPINOLENE

There are relatively few studies available concerning the use and exposure to fragranced products. Testing by the cosmetics/fragrance industry focuses on skin effects without taking into account respiratory, neurological, or systemic effects. There is little regulation of fragrance by regulatory agencies. Not only is too much perfume often offensive to many, more and more people consider it to be an indoor air pollutant. Some are quite vocal about their opposition to the use of perfumes. For years, I thought I was the only one who got headaches from strong perfume!

There is a movement afoot to curtail the use of fragrances in the work place. Many businesses, at the request of their employees, are creating fragrance-free policies. Given that many people are highly affected by allergies, this makes sense (pun intended, get it? ... sense...scents...).

But seriously, given that we are bombarded by more and more hazardous chemicals and pollution, having less on our bodies, homes and in our workplaces must be better for ALL of us. Breathe deeply and live well!

Nowadays, it is almost impossible to choose a fragrance that suits. In the months August to September 2007 there were over 30 new launches from an already saturated market. These range from the cheaper ones like Colleen (100ml for under £20) to the more expensive ones like Bvlgari Omnia Amethyste (£42 for 65ml)

There has also been a sudden surge in the amount of "celebrities" launching there own fragrance. I use the term "celebs" lightly - fragrances have recently been launched by "C" listers Shilpa Shetty (famous for Big Brother) and Coleen McLoughlin (famous for being Wayne Rooney's girlfriend) and join fragrances launched by Jade Goody (Big Brother) and Calum Best (George Best's son). On the other end of the scale there are "A List" celebs Kate Moss, Gwen Stefani, Katie Price, Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey also bringing out a fragrance. I can understand the reason why - there have been some very successful celebrity fragrance launches from "A listers" which include Britney Spears, Sean John Unforgivable (P Diddy), Kylie Minogue, David Beckham and Celine Dion which have earned millions of pounds.

Add these to the recent launches from famous brands such as Hugo Boss XX and XY, CKIN2U, Marc Jacobs Daisy, Paul Smith Rose, Diesel, Bvlgari Omnia Amethyste, Valentino Rock n Rose, Dior Midnight Poison and In White from Jesus Del Pozo (to name a few) many people will ask "WHAT DO I BUY?"

How To Choose

It is really difficult to recommend a fragrance to everyone because, generally, most fragrances actually smell differently on each person's skin, and also, naturally, everyone has their own specific taste. I have split the types into 2 different categories, Celebrity and Luxury;

Celebrity fragrance - This is a difficult one for those with partners! Do you buy the fragrance because you want your partner to be like the celebrity? (Katie Price, Kate Moss, Kylie Minogue, David Beckham, Gwen Stefani, P Diddy, Mariah Carey etc) or is it because you admire them for their work? Your partner could also have a high regard for the celebrity which is an easier excuse and reason for purchase! (Price ranges from £19.95 to £35 depending on size of bottle) - Buy these fragrances for the "celeb conscious" person who strives to be "part of a crowd"

Luxury Fragrance - This type of fragrance has the air of exclusivity and refinement that goes with the purchase. If you really want to treat a loved one I would suggest purchasing fragrance by Bvlgari, Jean Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs, Vera Wang, Carolina Hererra, Donna Karan (DKNY), Davidoff, Tommy Hilfiger, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci or Dolce and Gabbana to name a few. (Prices range from £25 - £60 depending on size) - Buy these fragrances for ultimate satisfaction and gratitude, where the wearer feels special and luxurious.

The price of a product depends on several factors; the type of scent (EDP, EDT, EDC), designer brand and, of course, the size. The most expensive are the pure perfume products, followed by EDP, EDT and EDC/Aftershave. Eau De Parfum (EDP) generally has an 8-15% concentration of perfume oil and the scent will evaporate in 5-8 hours. Eau de Toilette (EDT) has a 4-8% concentration of perfume oil and the scent will evaporate between 4-6 hours whilst Aftershave generally evaporates between 2-4 hours with a 3-5% concentration.

Good luck with your choice!

Health Risks of Perfume

Health Risks of Perfume

by Franchis Adam

It is well known that perfume was widely used to elevate moods or cure bodily ailments by royalty and commoners alike. Even pharmacists, who knew of the healing properties of the plant oils used in perfumes, applied these fragrant compounds to cure several ailments of their customers.

Besides the oil of plants, color was also used to heal. It is by no chance that a woman favors a particular color amongst various hues and tones. Certain colors reveal certain characteristics of the woman, which is then utilized for healing purposes. A woman and her perfume have an intense love affair rather than a half-hearted dalliance. The perfume was, is, and shall remain as unique as the woman was, is, and shall remain as different.

Nowadays perfumes are made up of synthetic compounds; however, earlier they were all made from plant oils extracted by various ingenious processes. These plant oils are still being used in certain high-end perfumes. Plant oils that are used in perfume are known to have beneficial effects on the general wellness of human beings. They act as antimicrobial, antifungal, antiparasitic, antiviral, and antibacterial agents. They also are known as antiseptics and strong disinfectants. Thus, people using plant oil based perfumes also benefit from their other properties that promote bodily health.

Basil oil is known for its mood enhancing property especially in cases of depression. It can also relieve migraines and headaches. Perfume with basil oil is widely used in Eastern countries. A very common oil that is used extensively in perfumery is Bergamot oil. Besides being an excellent insect repellant, it is also extremely helpful in chicken pox and cold sores. Persons under the influence of alcohol or other forms of intoxication are generally given a whiff of a perfume containing black pepper oil. This oil has a sharp smell, and enhances blood circulation. It helps in making these semi-conscious persons come to consciousness, in a pleasant and fragrant way.

Perfume containing black pepper oils is also used in bruises, as it increases circulation thereby promoting fast healing. Clove oil is used as an analgesic, antispasmodic, carminative, antiseptic, antiemetic, and is widely used in dentistry. Eucalyptus oil, sandalwood oil, lavender oil, thyme oil, are used for soothing headaches, inflammations, and minor cuts. Lemon oil is also known to have antistress and antidepression properties. Rose oil, Jasmine oil, Ylang-ylang oil, and sandalwood oil are popularly used as aphrodisiacs. Perfume having these oils is also used for such purposes besides being used purely for olfactory pleasures.

Over time, perfumers have found that colors play an important part on the choices of perfumes. Perfumers and perfume advisors frequently use the color rosette test to determine the inherent nature of the woman and which scent would ideally suit her. A woman is asked to select from seven different color combinations. It has been found that a woman who chooses a combination of red, orange, yellow, and pale green, is generally extroverted, optimistic, positive, and active. Her choice of perfume would be fresh-floral fragrant notes. If a woman chooses subdued, pastel-like hues, she generally would be introverted and pensive, seeking oriental fragrances. If a woman chooses blue-black or mauve, then she is generally inclined towards the mysterious and is extremely introverted, seeking rare scents and fragrances. Likewise, from different color combinations, a woman`s choice of perfumes, whether fruity, floral, Chypre, etc., may be determined.

However, before coming to a conclusion about a woman`s tendencies and tastes, it must be kept in mind that emotions, lifestyle, events, buying habits, and seasons, influence a woman`s decision while buying a perfume. For example, on a hot afternoon, almost all women, irrespective of their color preferences, choose scents with cool mint, or oceanic fragrances. Those same women, on a wintry afternoon would rather go for musk or floral fragrances, and during monsoon, they almost would always prefer fruity flavors for their perfumes.

What Perfume Lovers on Cruise Ships Must Know to Get the Best Deals in Fragrance

What Perfume Lovers on Cruise Ships Must Know to Get the Best Deals in Fragrance

by Joanna McLaughlin

I do not know of any perfumist who has created a perfume for cruises although Boston-based perfume maker Neil Morris (http://www.nielmorrisfragrances.com) once told me that he was considering introducing such a scent. Despite the fact that there is no specific cruise perfume that I know about, cruises and perfumes go together.

The cruise lines must think so, too, because most cruise ships feature perfume pretty prominently in their onboard shops. One perk I find in cruising is that you can sample a lot of different perfumes in these shops to really get the feel (and wear) of fragrances you might not normally try.

Cruise lines feature duty-free shopping but the astute woman of fragrance nosing around the cruise shop perfume counter may notice that prices on the perfumes onboard ship are not much different than prices back home at the local department store or online shop. So what's the big deal about duty-free anyway?

Perfume is one of those things, like diamond rings and the room rate at a Tahitian resort, that just doesn't go on sale. Most experienced women of fragrance can tell you that perfume prices are stable as the Rock of Gibraltar. The best deal you'll get from most perfume companies is some sort of packaged set at the holidays or for Mother's Day.

Do not be disappointed if the boittle of perfume you priced at $60 at the local department store or the $100 gift set that you have seen online at the Sephora website (great place to buy fragrance) are not marked down just because you are onboard a ship. (Perhaps there will be good news, but do not anticipate anything even remotely like a big discount or a cut rate.)

The benefit duty-free shopping is that you don't pay tax (city, state, or federal) on your purchase. For instance, buy that $60 bottle of perfume at your hometown department store, and you can expect to pay about another $5 in sales tax. (That's based on an approximate sales tax rate in the U.S. of 8%. If you live in Canada, it's closer to 12% and in Europe, it's higher than that!)

Most Europeans instantly "get" the concept of duty-free shopping because it is customary in Europe to add the tax to the purchase price that appears on the label. Thus, seeing the price without the tax added in shows the discount quite plainly.

In the U.S., sales tax is a lot more sneaky. It does not appear until you're standing at the checkout when it is just tacked on to the purchase price.

Buying duty-free eliminates the tax. Of course, in the U.S. you could also go online and buy perfume from an out-of-state vendor and in that way avoid paying sales tax. However, you'll get dinged with shipping and handling charges.

When you buy something duty free, you are paying only what the merchandise cost. Even if you don't get a penny off the retail price of your next bottle of Chanel or Michael Kors or DKNY Be Delicious, you'll still leave the store paying less than you would have using more traditional outlets.

Another great reason to buy perfume on a cruise ship is that you can really try it before you buy it. You can pop into the cruise shop, get a spritz on the scent you're considering, and then wear it for the day. Women of fragrance can tell you that sniffing at a perfume in the bottle or spritzing it on a paper strip are useful, but there is no truer test to whether or not you'll love a new scent than actually wearing it for a few hours.

I had that experience with Cinema by Yves St. Laurent. I liked the scent well enough when I used the paper tester strip but there were many other perfumes that seemed more intriguing and interesting. Yet when I did a "test" of wearing Cinema for an afternoon, I found that I loved the scent.

The range of perfumes your cruise ship will carry will depend on the cruise line. Most cruise ships manage to stock a pretty decent range of products. Look for some big names (Givenchy, Chanel, Lancome, and so on) and some newer names (DKNY, Michael Kors, Vera Wang).

You won't find everything. For instance, on my last cruise, I found the shop had Chanel No. 5, Chance, and Allure from Chanel, but no No. 19. There were many Estee Lauder cosmetics in stock, but no fragrances. Dolce & Gabbana's Blue was available, but no other scents. It is possibly to locate unusual, hard-to-find, or relatively rare scents (I was charmed to find Incanto Charms byFerragamo) but most cruise onboard boutiques are not fully stocked perfumeries.

When purchasing perfume onboard, the duty-free purchase counts toward the allowance of merchandise you are allowed to bring back into the country. American citizens are allowed to return from their international cruises with $800 in purchases (per person). Should you exceed that sum, you must declare it to customs and it is possible that you may be asked to pay duty upon your return to the U.S.

What about buying perfume at your ports of call? That depends on whether or not the port charges sales tax and if there are good perfume stores available.

A big surprise for cruising perfume lovers is Cozumel, Mexico. Not only does this sunny Mexican Riveria destination not charge sales tax, there is an outstanding (and very large) perfume boutique in the shopping district immediately near the port. (Just get off the cruise ship and head to the left to the stores .... it's just a few blocks down.)

European ports charge hefty taxes but may offer perfumes that are not so easy to find in the U.S.

But if perfume lovers go cruising, they can purchase their old and new favorite scents onboard their cruise ship with confidence.

Victory in Diversity: The Art of Selling womens Perfume

Victory in Diversity: The Art of Selling womens Perfume

by Jade Honeywell

Creating womens perfume is a fine art. It's a long and skillful process to bring a new brand to market and turnover to new and trendier scents is so fast that few womens perfumes survive for very long. Perfume consumers tend to be fickle such that, before a brand gets to embed itself into the consumer's behavior, another brand comes up to challenge it. To have a long-standing heritage for producing quality womens perfume is quite a feat.

There is no clear-cut answer as to what womens perfume type is more likely to sell. The brands are as diverse as the market it caters to. Anything goes as far as concocting womens perfume is concerned.

Manufacturers work from the premise that the brand of perfume a woman chooses tells a lot about the woman who is wearing it. Advertising tells us that some scents are subtle but seductive, some are loud and innocent and some are playful and downright flirtatious. They say that the more playful and eclectic womens perfumes and brands are more for the younger strata of female society. But how much of this is true and how much is hype is another issue.

The top selling less expensive womens perfumes are often aimed at younger women and those who are just out of their teenage or adolescent years. The older a woman gets, the more she is likely to be able to afford more expensive brands and the greater the chance that she has settled on her favorites for both day and evening wear.

Most women like to exercise their own individuality and although it is sometimes difficult to cater to this need in an industry which pays so much emphasis on collective categorizations of target markets, the important thing about marketing womens perfume is that the advertising makes every women feel she will be special and unique whilst wearing that particular scent.

In Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the first ones that need to be met are the categories of physical survival such as food, clothing and shelter. Perfumes and other toiletries do not exactly fit into this bracket as a necessity of life, but when manufacturers are able to capitalize on the strengths of their products, they find that more and more women will continue to make time and prioritize buying perfume almost as though it were one of the more basic needs.

Perfume Selection Tips From The Experts

Perfume Selection Tips From The Experts

Your special "smell" creates a lasting impression on the people you meet. The scent created by your perfume and unique body smell is like your personal message to the people you come in contact with every single day.

A long lasting "scent" effect is created if you know how to layer fragrance on your body to be able to build and create a fragrance foundation. Importantly, you have to be aware of your particular skin type as it could always affect how a particular perfume can smell on you. What may smell great on others may not necessarily smell great on you. Those with oily skin should remember that the perfume's essential oils will react with your very own natural oils to create an intense scent. As for those with dry skin, fragrance is not retained that long as compared to those with oily skin, so the fragrance has to be reapplied as often as necessary.

Perfumes should be kept away from extreme heat and kept in a cool and dry place. Once it is opened, it should be used as over time the fragrance will fade or change in character. The perfume's exposure to the sun can affect its scent as the perfume's balance is disturbed.

Lighter scents are more appropriate for hot weather while stronger scents should be reserved for the dry and cooler weather.

Perfume should be applied right after a shower when your pores are open.

When you are testing scents, the perfume should be applied to the skin directly to obtain the perfume's true reaction instead of smelling it from the bottle or smelling it from a piece of paper sprayed with the scent. The wrist would be a perfect spot to test it on. Allow the perfume to settle and interact with your body heat and natural scent before taking on a whiff.

When you are shopping for perfume, never try on more than three different scents as your nose will lose its ability to be able to tell the difference. Smelling on coffee beans can clear your sense of smell so before taking a whiff at another scent get yourself smelling on some coffee beans first. You can apply the first two scents on your wrists and then the third one on the crook of your arm (inside the elbow bend).

Using perfume or fragrance during the day will improve your mood and overall well-being. By smelling great, you are acting gracious to the people around you as you make your life and those around you smelling great and pleasurable.

Dog Cologne: Want Your Dog to Smell Better? Try A New Approach

Dog Cologne: Want Your Dog to Smell Better? Try A New Approach

by Jane Saeman

Dogs have become a huge part of our lives. They are with us more than ever, whether we are going to the store, spending a day at the park, or just snuggling in the couch. We treat them like our kids, taking them wherever we go, which is why it is important for them to smell as fresh and clean as much as possible.

Nobody likes a smelly dog and if your canine companion is going to be accompanying you everywhere you go, keeping him clean and odor-free is just good etiquette, especially around other people.

Instead Of Doggie Clothes, Try A Little Perfume - For Dogs Of Course!

It's no wonder that for many dog owners, dog perfumes and sprays have gone beyond grooming and accessorizing. In fact, they have become more of a necessity. Unlike a fancy collar or a shirt, dog perfume is a way of pampering your dog without going overboard on accessories. It is also something that doesn't go out of style and will not get chewed up by your pet.

Spraying a little spritz on your dog keeps him smelling fresh and clean in between baths, thereby giving you, the busy owner, an extra day or two to bathe him. Some sprays even come with a special formula that literally repels dirt, so your dog will not only smell good, but will stay cleaner until his next bath.

Dog Scents Are Also Healthy: In addition to the appealing smell, dog sprays also offer benefits for your canine friend. They have ingredients that moisturize your dog's coat and skin and prevent matting. There is also a spray that offers a touch of shimmer on your dog's coat while giving it a pleasant smell at the same time. There is even a spray that comes with glitter to add additional sparkle to his coat.

Dabbing a little perfume on your dog also gives you the opportunity to get closer to him. When your dog smells fresh and clean, you are more likely to pick him up, play with him, and spend more time with him. You can have your dog on your lap or the couch and not worry about that "doggie smell".

Dog perfumes come in different varieties and are specially designed to have a pleasing smell for both the owner and his dog. Some are made of the delicate blend of the sweetest flowers while others contain essential oils as their main ingredients. Lavender and chamomile offer a soothing scent, while rose and jasmine create an extra boost of fragrance. Peppermint makes your dog's coat shine and lemongrass makes an excellent deodorizer.

The Advantages Of Buying Discount Perfume

The Advantages Of Buying Discount Perfume

by Charlotte Hargreaves

A person with a finite budget does not have to feel that they can't purchase high quality perfumes. There are many companies nowadays that specialize in buying and selling discount perfumes that are the same products as the high price perfumes available at fragrance stores. Discount perfumes are a fantastic way of having a fragrance that is very popular without spending large sums of money. These companies are very easy to purchase from as many of them have online stores where the items are freely available.

A search on any internet search engine will find the discount perfume products you are looking for. Anyone can type in the specific perfume they are searching for and considerable amounts of internet stores will appear that offer that special scent at a discounted price. If you would like to try out various different perfumes without spending a lot of money this is a great opportunity. A full collection of perfumes can be bought at a fraction of the usual cost.

Internet Stores

There are any many internet stores that will have good discounted perfumes available. You may want to be cautious if the price appears to be too good to be true because there are stores that sell counterfeit perfumes rather than the real product. These counterfeits may look like the real fragrance but are not the same product and can even contain ingredients that may be harmful. It is important for a buyer to ensure that any internet store they are buying from is an authentic operation. The old saying if it seems to be too good to be true, it probably is applies well to these online marketplaces.

Some large department stores will sell discounted perfumes from an internet store. These large stores have begun to realize that the reduced overhead of an internet store as opposed to the large store in the high street makes it easier to offer reduced prices and sale items. The stores often offer free shipping for orders over a certain amount making the deal an even better one. Having a large company name behind the purchase will ensue that the discount perfume is the correct product. Of course, it is always commendable supporting some of the smaller businesses that can be found on the internet and the vast majority of these businesses will deal in original brands of discounted perfumes. Whichever store you choose to buy from you will be happy with your opportunity to find name brand perfumes at a discounted price.

What Perfume Can Do For You

What Perfume Can Do For You

by C. Deveraux

You might not have thought about having a fragrance, and you might not have thought that a fragrance could do anything for you. However, you'd be wrong to assume this because for just about anyone a fragrance can do a lot. One simple bottle of designer perfume can allow you to give the fit of fragrance without going overboard, and someone is bound to appreciate it.

Perfume can do a lot for you as a person. Many people have a perfume that they love, or a cologne or fragrance that is something they have always loved. Fragrances on people have always meant a lot because they give people a chance to be able to show who they are and to present themselves in a great way. You'll always pay more attention to someone who smells great, and to someone who simply has a scent that seems to fit who they are. Even cheap perfume can leave a lasting impact on people.

The best thing about the colognes on the markets is that you will remember someone for what they wear. Wearing perfume or skin care products, even discount perfume, can mean that when you leave a room, your scent stays. This should be a good thing, because people will remember what you smell like. Scents like Giorgio Armini, Gucci, Lancome and Calvin Klein, as well as Versace, Fendi, Burberry perfume or Cartier perfume all speak many different things. After you leave a room, what you smell like will linger, and people will remember you. You want it to be something good, and you also want it to be something that matches who you are and what you hope to accomplish in life.

For great gifts, perfume and different perfumes and colognes simply can't be beat. A very good romance gift is that or perfume, and so is a great birthday gift or Christmas gift. You never want to pass up an opportunity to help someone feel and smell great.

The best way to choose a fragrance is not by the name or how expensive it is. The best way is to spray a little bit on yourself and walk away, letting the smell stay with you. Buying The Ideal Gift For Women- Match The Gift to Her Personality and Interests

Buying The Ideal Gift For Women- Match The Gift to Her Personality and Interests

by My Linh Duong

It is often said that women are a very difficult gender to buy for, and may I add that it is usually the male gender who says this. When it comes down to buying the right present for a women, I got to thinking, are we 'female species' really that difficult to buy for? My answer to this would be no, if you try and find a gift to match her personality and interests. In this article, I will highlight some gift ideas to match various personalities and interests The Out- Going Type Who Likes to Have Fun-funny and novelty gifts are a good match for a women with this personality. Here are some that I have picked.

Candy Bra- as the name implies this is a bra made purely of candy (yes sweets!). The sweets themselves, of which there are 330, are the delicious necklace sweets that we all used to love as kids. It's no longer the case of 'do my boobs look good in this?', but rather now the question 'do my boobs look TASTY in this?' Also in this range are Candy G-String and Candy Garter.

Wind Up Racing Grannies- this hilarious novelty toy is a pair of grannies, who when you wind them up, will race each other, holding onto their walking supports! These racing grannies really are very funny to watch, and a great gift for a female who likes to laugh! In this range is also Wind Up Fighting Grandads (yes, these two grandads fight each other with their walking stick.

The Homely Type- if the female you are buying for is, it is obvious to say that buying her something for her home is the perfect match. However, to pinpoint even further it is wise to buy a home gift that suits her taste, whether it be traditional or contemporary. There is of course a vast array of products available, but here are 2 examples of gifts to suit this type of female.

Hand Crafted Mango Wood Candle Holders- these particular candle holders are stylish and with a contemporary look, it will fit well into the modern home. Although there are of course many types available, the ones I would highlight here in fact come as a set of 3 square holders, each bigger larger then next and fit 'into' each other.

Pop Corn Maker- a homely person is someone who not only is proud of her home, but likes to spend her time in it. I have chosen the pop corn maker, because on those DVD nights, it makes a perfect combination.

The Creative Type - if she is what you would call the creative type, buying her a gift which has creative flare would be a good match. Here are two examples.

Hand Painted Pop Art Canvas - the painting itself can be a replication of a photo print, be it a famous person, a city or a personal photo. The creativity is in the conversion of the photo into a pop art piece. There are also other creative designs that can be achieved such as Retro, Illustration and Warhol. However, these designs tend to usually be for personalised photos.

The Beauty and Fashion Conscious- it would be fair to say there are many women in this category. The choice of gifts you have available here is vast. The more traditional gifts such as clothes and perfume is an obvious choice. Here are two slightly more unique gifts that fall into this category.

Bath Pearls - having a nice hot bubble bath after a long hard day at work is to most women, heaven. Bath Pearls make a great addition to the ambience of relaxation and spa therapy. They float on water and will change into 7 different colours constantly. These ambient lighting bath pearls are ideal for a relaxing session in the bath.

The Personal Stylist - now, do not be fooled by the words personal stylist and think that this is something only the rich and famous can afford. This very unique and useful gift is in fact a personal stylist in a gift box. This gift box consists of personal style report compiled by a fashion stylist who has worked with top celebrities and actors. The recipient has to fill out a questionnaire, answering questions on areas such as their height measurements, body niggles, colouring, style personality and face shape. They will receive a personal style report to include: what colours suit you, how to maximise your assets, what clothes suit your body shape and height, how to dress to disguise your body niggles, what items are a must for your wardrobe, how your face shape impacts what make-up and hair choices you should make and lots, lots more. I would consider this an excellent gift for the fashion conscious woman.

Although there is a much large range of personalities and interests to consider, I have not covered them all in this article. The aim of this article is to help drive your chain of thoughts when finding a gift for a woman, and I hope that I have gone a little way to achieve that.

How To Use Pheromone Concentrate For Better Appeal To The Opposite Sex

How To Use Pheromone Concentrate For Better Appeal To The Opposite Sex

by Dean Caporella

The use of pheromone concentrate to enhance one's appeal to others has just about become part of a person's armoury in the attraction game.

Does the fact it's a concentrate increase it's power of sub conscious persuasion? No, in fact, if you are considering a pheromone concentrate over a cologne you need to recognize the difference in the two products.

A pheromone cologne is packaged and ready to use as is. The problem with many pheromone-enhanced fragrances is many people either don't like the aroma used in the product or people prefer to stick with their own fragrance.

The good news for those thinking they need to use the cologne supplied by a seller is you can still use your favorite fragrance.

How?

By purchasing a pheromone concentrate. It can be added to your usual cologne or perfume and the only difference people will notice is, well, none. Except your cologne is now emitting invisible subliminal senses to others.

It can also be used on it's own. In fact, if you simply want to avoid wearing a fragrance, you can dab a little concentrate with a supplied brush to areas such as the back of the wrist, the neckline, the back of the ear or even on your clothes.

Should Concentrate Be Used With A Cologne

The question of whether it's more effective to use just a pheromone concentrate as opposed to using it with a cologne is very pertinent.

Understand, just because it's a concentrated doesn't mean it's power to attract is strengthened. In fact, most experts in the pheromone products industry will tell you more is not better.

Realistically, using it with your cologne or perfume is an extremely good idea. This is because the fragrance is the first thing a person will notice and it virtually acts as the vehicle to carry the pheromones.

With a cologne's power to be picked up by a person's sense of smell, it makes good sense that your pheromone concentrate be mixed in with the fragrance for maximum effect.

One more point to remember, simply wearing a pheromone concentrate enhanced-product is not a guarantee to a night of lust. The effect of being a good communicator is a powerful ally. It's said the power of using a pheromone product product comes from the confidence it instills in the wearer.

Whether this is true or not, it certainly does make perfectly good sense.

Cosmetics: how healthy are they?

Cosmetics: how healthy are they?

by Groshan Fabiola

Nowadays everyone has high expectations regarding the looks of the people surrounding them. A scar, dried skin of the hands, a smelling breath and greasy hair, are not desirable elements for a modern women or man.

Cosmetics are used to make our body look better, our skin smell nice, our teeth look white, generally for making us more presentable to the world. Cosmetics is a vast field containing body lotions, creams more or less perfumed, make up products, toot pastes, hair dyes and all kind of deodorants.

People sometimes wonder about the ingredients of cosmetics. The base of every cosmetic is preservatives and fragrance. Preservatives used in cosmetics can harm the skin by causing irritations on it. The use of the preservatives is for keeping bacteria away from cosmetics, and protecting the product against the action of air and light upon it. Some preservatives like bithionol, mercury compounds, hexachlorophene, and zirconium complexes are suspected of causing skin cancer.

Fragrances come also in more than 5000 different kinds and are known to harm the sensitive skin. This is why producers have also made 'fragrance free cosmetics' that do not contain any perfume, so that people with sensitive skin could enjoy cosmetics too.

Sometimes if used improperly cosmetics can harm us. For example using mascara while driving, riding in a bus or plane can damage the eye if you scratch it with the product's wand. Sharing make up can also bring trouble as cosmetic brushes can easily retain the skin's bacteria. This is why sponges and brushes must be washed up at least once a week. Some cosmetics for skincare and hair care can cause acne if that person using them does not use the type of non-comedogenic cosmetics that are indicated for acne skin.

Cosmetics can be used only for a few while after they have been opened. For example eye liners and mascara can be used only one six months after they were opened otherwise they might cause eye infections. For those natural cosmetics that contain no preservatives the usage time after opening is even shorter as bacteria develops in their composition faster than in the cosmetics that contain preservatives.

Before using cosmetics it is best to carefully read their label and see if they are good for your skin type, if they are not expired and if they have preservatives and fragrance in the composition.

The Oils Needed To Make Perfume

The Oils Needed To Make Perfume

by Charlotte Hargreaves

Perfumes have been around for centuries. People extract the oils from plants and animals the mix this with water and alcohol to create the right scent that people will want to wear.

There are many different manufacturers in the world market. Some use the same ingredients while others have certain secrets which helps to differentiate one brand from anotherr.

The most important ingredient in creating your own perfume is the essential oils. Each one has a different chemical composition so those who want to start perfume making have to know the difference between a base, middle, top and bridge notes.

There are books and other related information on the Internet as well as kits that come with an instructional manual and other things inside that will be needed for mixing and storing the finished product.

The first step in perfume making is the combination of the oils. You should first mix a few drops each of the essential oils. It must always have a correct percentage of base, middle and top note.

It may not smell that good yet and that is why the next type of essential oil is needed. This is known as the bridge note that blends everything together to create the perfect scent.

After the essential oils have been mixed, it is the time to pour alcohol into the mixture. Some manufacturers have also used an Everclear beverage that is also works as an alcohol base.

The general rule when combining essential oils with alcohol is that a maximum of 20 drops must be administered for every 4 ml. of alcohol.

The final step in creating your perfume making is to add water. Once again, the vessel containing all the ingredients should be briskly shaken for everything to mix together well.

The perfume should be stored in a coloured bottle to prevent it from being exposure to light. After two days, the contents can then be placed in a sprayer bottle so that it can be used.

You also have the option of storing it for a longer period of time should you wish. It is best to check on the scent from time to time to make sure nothing is amiss. If you are are not satisfied add a little more oil into the fragrance and wait for a few more days for it to settle in.

Those who do this properly will notice that the scent will stay longer on the skin as some will just disappear within a few minutes.

There are various methods in making perfumes and this will really depend on the taste of the person developing it. Those who want it to last longer can pour more of a base essential oil rather than the middle or top. The important thing is that the person should follow the proper steps in making this happen.

A valuable tip when working with essential oils is to keep clear notes on everything. You will surely make some mistakes along the way but reviewing each stage will make it easy to narrow down where the error was committed.

Perfume making is always a lot of fun. There are many different oils and the only way to get it right is through trial and error.

Perfume In Ancient Egypt

Perfume In Ancient Egypt

by Roberto Sedycias

Perfume was at the centre of aesthetics and therapeutics for both men and women in Ancient Egypt. Although the techniques used are mostly unrecorded, historians look to the literature of Greek and Roman writers and relief paintings and artefacts to determine the production, fashions and uses of perfume in this fascinating era.

The act of making perfume was considered an art form in Ancient Egypt. The craftsperson was considered to be an artist and the profession was open to women as well as men. The perfume making process of extraction can be determined by reliefs on the walls of tombs in Petosiris. These show that perfume making had an overseer, workers who completed the extraction and a professional tester who completed rigorous testing using the sense of smell.

The reliefs also pictorially detail two extraction processes. The first process shown was an ancient mechanical extraction process which was similar to wine production. This required a large bag and two staffs which were used as a press. The second was a form of chemical extraction with the assistance of heat and soaking in alcohol. The processes are early versions of modern perfume extraction techniques that have only really advanced in terms of equipment available and synthetic ingredients.

The reliefs also show red berries poured from a container, which details the nature of the products used to extract different scents. The ingredients used in perfume were usually plant in origin such as henna and cinnamon. The ancient natural philosopher, Pliny the Elder, records floral scents such as iris, bitter almond and lilies in his Natural History as being used in abundance. Myrrh which is a resin from shrubs and other aromatic woods were used. Animal fats such as musk are also recorded as being used in some perfumes. Some Egyptian recipes are still in existence though they are difficult to replicate.

However, the Egyptians had typically exotic tastes, and in addition to home grown essences, they also imported aromatics such as ladanum from Arabia and East Africa, galbanum from Persia, and the coveted frankincense due to unsuccessful attempts to grow it in Egyptian climes. The fact that ingredients were imported even in ancient times shows the importance of perfume. The imported varieties were expensive and initially reserved for the use of the gods or export only.

Excavated reliefs show that from ancient times the blend and quantity of perfume was as important as how long the scent would last. Perfume was a major export material in ancient times with various countries battling to produce the highest quality. Susinum was a particular favourite, and the competitive nature shows that in ancient times, some form of uniformity and standard was expected. Pliny the Elder described an Egyptian perfume that retained its scent after 8 years, and the ancient Greek botanist, Dioscorides, agreed that Egyptian perfume was far superior to that made by other civilisations.

Egyptian perfumes were usually named after the town of production or the main ingredient. Storage was in glass or stone vessels, with alabaster being the most coveted. The decoration was ornate and often bejewelled, with packaging reflecting modern day requirements of functionality and attractiveness. Perfume was burnt as incense, as named in documents from the reign of Thutmose III which detail different varieties such as green incense and white incense. Perfume was worn for aesthetic reasons, in the form of oil based liquid infusions, or wax and fat for creams and salves. This suggests there was also a medicinal purpose recognised.

Perfume was mainly for the elite classes until the golden age. It was used by kings who were believed to be of divine descent as it was believed that the gods favoured perfume. High officials were anointed with perfume when they were appointed to office to call the favour of the gods.

Incense was used to hide the smell of animal sacrifice during ceremonies. Balms were seen as medicinal as perfume was thought to repel demons and win the favour of the gods. Perfume was also an important part of death and burial rites. Bodies were perfumed during mummification as it was believed the soul would visit the gods and so perfume would repel demons. Interestingly, 3300 years after Tutankhamen death, scent could still be detected in his tomb.

Three Places To Find Cheap Perfume

Three Places To Find Cheap Perfume

by Kellie Lynne

We all know how costly it can be to purchase the hottest designer scents. Wearing the latest fragrances being manufactured by top designers, large cosmetic companies, and Hollywood celebrities can cost a small fortune. Perfumes alone can cost several hundred dollars an ounce and that does not even include the many additional items that you can purchase that can create a huge hit on the credit card. All is not lost though, because you do not have to spend a small fortune on designer perfume. It is possible to find expensive perfume cheap if you shop at the right places.

Forget about the department stores if you are looking to buy cheap perfume. Without stumbling across a huge sale, it will cost you an obscene amount of money to purchase a name brand perfume in a department store. You are much better off to visit a local perfume outlet instead of going to a cosmetics counter at your local friendly neighborhood mall.

You can now find a perfume outlet at most malls, bit if there is not a perfume outlet at the mall nearest you an outlet mall is worth taking the time to find. You will probably be very happy with the amount of money that you will save there. Nearly all perfume outlets price designer perfume cheap. They may not have all of the additional products that are made from your chosen fragrance, but the majority of perfumes and colognes can usually be purchased for up to a seventy percent discount. When shopping there, be sure you are purchasing an actual designer brand instead of a cheap knock off. The knock off will probably smell pretty close to the brand that you know and enjoy, but usually contains a lot more alcohol. A high concentration of alcohol will cause your fragrance to go flat and make the scent wear off much quicker.

Another great location to find cheap perfume is a discount store that carries seconds from department stores and the previous year's fashions. TJ Maxx, Ross, and Marshals are all places that always carry an excellent assortment of designer perfume cheap. These stores do not keep their perfumes locked inside of a cosmetic counter, so you should always check inside the box to make sure that you are getting the full bottle that you are paying for.

You can also find terrific bargains for name brand perfumes at many internet auction sites like EBay. There are a lot of people that are looking to unload a perfume that was received as a gift, but is just not a fragrance that they care for. You can get some incredibly costly fragrances at very cheap prices, because most sellers are satisfied to be able to get any price for a fragrance they neither want nor like.

There is no reason for you to get sticker shock when buying designer perfume. Knowing where to shop is the key to purchasing the top brands of designer perfume cheap.

What Perfume Can Do For You

What Perfume Can Do For You
Submitted By: C. Deveraux

You might not have thought about having a fragrance, and you might not have thought that a fragrance could do anything for you. However, you’d be wrong to assume this because for just about anyone a fragrance can do a lot.

You’ll always pay more attention to someone who smells great, and to someone who simply has a scent that seems to fit who they are.

For great gifts, perfume and different perfumes and colognes simply can’t be beat.

If it is something that you like and something that you enjoy smelling like, it might be the scent for you. You can do some research into what different kinds of scents work with different people, and then try some out for yourself. You’ll find that no matter what you wear, you are going to feel happier wearing great perfumes or colognes, and once you find one that fits your needs and your body you’ll forget what it was like to not wear it!
