Perfume Definitions And Facts

Perfume Definitions And Facts
By Sandy Lindberg

The following are definitions and facts about perfume that you may not know. This information might enlighten, delight, and educate you when purchasing the right fragrance for you or for someone else.

Perfume Pleasant odor, a preparation used for scenting, fragrant, sweet, or agreeable in smell. (parfum)

Perfumery A perfume house that creates perfumes.

“Nose” A nose is a person who creates fragrances. Years ago perfume making was handed down throughout generations among families. However, now there are schools dedicated to the science of perfume making. Currently, there are three major French perfume-makers having their own in-house blender. These three are Chanel, Guerlain, and Jean Patou.

Eau de Parfum (EDP) 10-30% aromatic compounds. Usually has the most intensity and longevity.

Eau de Toilette (EDT) 5-20% aromatic compounds. Usually is less intense and less longevity than EDP. NOTE: Different design houses may vary the intensity where EDT may be stronger than EDP.

Eau de Cologne (EDC) 2-5% aromatic compounds. This is a type of light perfume that originated in Cologne, Germany and is defined by its typical concentration of about 2-5% esential oils. Eau de Cologne, or just "cologne", has now become a generic term. Ironically, however, the original Eau de Cologne from Cologne is not an Eau de cologne, but anEau de Toilette, because it contains more than 5% aromatic compounds.

Why do many older people use too much perfume? As people get older, their sense of smell diminishes. Therefore, they apply too much perfume.

Does a fragrance smell the same on everyone? No. Everyone has a unique body chemistry based on skin type, hair color, and the environment in which we live. It is important to try a fragrance on your skin to see how it reacts with your own body chemistry. Also, different skin types affect the fragrance. Oily skin holds scents much more than dry skin. People with dry skin need to reapply more often.

How long can a fragrance be stored? Fragrances do not last forever. Fragrance bottles should be stored in a dry, dark place. Keep them away from heat as extreme temperatures can detroy them. Colognes and eau de toilettes (not parfum) may be kept in the refrigerator to keep them fresh. Fragrances can last up to three years from manufacture date. Take care to check dates.

Does perfume stain clothing? Most perfumes are safe to spray on your clothes without leaving a stain.

Fragrance Lamps - Top 5 Reasons To Use These Over Candles

Fragrance Lamps - Top 5 Reasons To Use These Over Candles
By Bill Quinn

1) Safety - No Open Flame

Everyone has heard a story about a candle left burning causing considerable damage. Except for initial start up, fragrance lamps do not have an open flame. During the start up process, a flame is used to heat the stone. The flame is required for about 5-7 minutes. After that, the catalytic process of the lamp causes the fragrance oil to be drawn up the wick and then distributed.

2) Safety - Lower Operating Temperature

The temperature of the stone on an active fragrance lamp is about 500 degrees which is 1/3 the 1,500 degrees for the flame on a candle. The decorative cap on the fragrance lamp will have a temperature of about 130 degrees. The cap shields the stone from touch.

3) Fragrance Treatment instead of cover up

The catalytic process actually destroys the odor molecules rather than simply masking the odor. After the odor molecule is destroyed, the effusion process takes over and the pleasant fragrance remains. The throw of the fragrance lamp is considerably larger than throw of a candle. Stated another way, a fragrance lamp will cause the fragrance to be distributed over a larger area than a candle.

4) Fragrance Strength

The unique benefits of fragrance lamps is that you can mix the fragrance oil to meet your liking. If the fragrance is too strong, you can dilute the fragrance with a diluting oil. In fact, if you want to simply destroy odors, you can use the diluting fuel at full strength which will leave the room with a fresh smell but no distinguishable scent.

5) No Soot or Residue Fragrance Delivery

Fragrance lamps do not emit any residue. A few of the fragrance fuels will cause a white steam. This is not residue or soot such as you might receive from burning candles.

What Is The Real Difference Between Perfumes And Colognes?

What Is The Real Difference Between Perfumes And Colognes?
By Gregg Hall

Perfumes and colognes as well as other scented products have been used for centuries to trigger responses in our body from our acute sense of smell which is the strongest of our senses. They are not made one for women and the other for men, rather the difference is in intensity with perfumes having the strongest and long lasting scent and colognes being less strong and of shorter duration.

Any discussion of perfume leads one to the capitol of the modern fragrance industry which of course is France. What many people don't realize though is that it wasn't the French who discovered perfume any more than Columbus discovered the New World, the Egyptians originated the art of making fragrances it was the French who took it from an art to a science and then a multi-billion dollar industry.

In designing fragrances the biggest problem that is faced is that of longevity. Every scent will fade and become less fragrant over a period of time although some last longer than others. The French discovered the secret to overcoming this as much as possible and found that by layering the scents in three layers known as notes a fragrance could be given prolonged life. These notes are classed as top notes which are intense but short duration, middles, which will last most of the day and base notes will last until the night.

Deciding whether to buy French fragrances or not isn't just a decision based on personal preference. While, the fragrances that you like are certainly important and the ones from France will definitely give you some of the best it is also an economic decision. The top of the line fragrances from France are extremely high priced to the point that you really do have to be quite wealthy to even justify buying them. There are many scents on the market that are excellent without breaking the bank though.

As opposed to the three layered perfumes, colognes are single scents and are quite a bit weaker, the ones made for women are usually sprays but there are some splash bottle products too.

You have to be really careful when applying cologne as it is easy to put on too much, which I am sure we have all experienced if not on ourselves by someone walking by! The fragrance should be very subtle as to blend with your own body's natural pheromones. A less in more philosophy is what is needed when it comes to applying a scent.

All About Different Categories in Fragrance

All About Different Categories in Fragrance
By Ron Victor

You may come across several categories of fragrances and perfume today; in fact perfume is at crest comprising eau de parfum, eau de toilette, and eau de cologne, each has lesser degree of aromatic oils, correspondingly. Perfume is extremely prized exactly as it lasts from morning till night. Additionally, perfume carries well, in the sense that the sent remains fresh as the day wears on. Actually, branded perfume is intended to smell good all through its various stages of wear.

Aromatic multifarious used in perfumes have compound element interactions. While we may picture a group of company executives snuffling bottles of different mixtures to see what reeks top. In order for a scent to last all through the day, tens or even hundreds of elements are used so that the perfume carry on to ‘bloom'. Essentially, as one group of compounds is exhausted, another re-enlivens the scent and adds up its own tone. Perfume is said to have three notes, which work together to shape the permanent fragrance.

The top note is the first scent when applied. This scent remains only a few minutes to an hour, and might be somewhat strong. As it lessens it discloses the middle note of the fragrance, also recognized as the heart or body of the scent. The aromatic elements, which make up the heart last for long, but finally give way to the base note, or fundamental tone of the perfume. The most favorable perfume scent of the base note takes time to expand, so at first this tone is not as enjoyable, but is masked by the top and center notes. By the time they make softer, the bottom note of the perfume is completely developed, and in an ideal world helps to boost the other notes.

While flowers frame work the principal source for chemical compounds used in perfumes, fragrance, bark, wood, resins, leaves, tobacco and citrus as well further add up to the various groups of scents. Synthetic substances have in addition become well-liked and are more consistent from an industry point of view, as they are reliable to work with, unlike natural skin care products.

How To Properly Apply Mens Cologne

How To Properly Apply Mens Cologne
By Cody Kahl

Everyone has had to ask this question before. It’s one of those taboo things that guys don’t seem to want to ask; who knows why. What really gets me is that a lot of men don’t actually know how to properly apply mens cologne.

That’s right; you too may be wasting money and not getting the results you deserve from your chosen fragrance. Let’s go over the best places on your body to spray some ‘magic juice’, as well as a few other things you should know.

You have probably sprayed cologne on your clothes at one time or another hoping that the smell would last. This is exactly the opposite of what you want to do. Clothes are not a hotspot and therefore will cause the smell of the pheromone to dissipate rapidly. Not only that, but by spraying cologne on your clothing you won’t give the fragrance a chance to react with your body the way it is meant to.

What are these hotspots then? Hotspots are areas on your body that produce more heat than others. Some of these hotspots are also called pulse points. These include the wrists, neck, and back of ears. All of these points produce heat and allow the fragrance to react with your body. It is recommended that you apply your mens cologne to these points if you need to smell good for the night. Air will constantly hit the fragrance at these points, and the smell will not last as long as if applied to the other spots we will discuss below.

Why would I recommend you wear perfume on these spots if the smell might not last all day? It is really simple. When you go out at night you are usually leaning in and talking to women, etc. With the smell being out in the air as well as around your neck area, the aroma will be a little more “out there”.

You are probably asking “then where do I apply a fragrance if I need the scent to last longer for work or something”? The answer is; since air will quench the scent faster, you want to wear your fragrance under your clothes. This will cause the scent to linger evenly through the day. The best hotspots for this are the wrists, chest area, back, and thighs.

The one thing that remains constant no matter what your situation, is don’t overspray the perfume! Keep it subtle. Two to three sprays is all you need. Of course use your judgment, but too little is better than too much here. If you have ‘splash’ cologne that doesn’t spray, just put your index finger over the bottle opening, and tip the bottle. That way you won’t pour too much on.

Now there is no excuse for not wearing your mens cologne properly, or not wearing a pheromone at all!

EDT, EDP, EDC? The Various Types Cologne And Perfume

EDT, EDP, EDC? The Various Types Cologne And Perfume
By Cody Kahl

Not all cologne and perfume is made equally. In fact there are four different concentrations of perfume, each one being very different from the other.

In this article I am going to discuss the four different variations of cologne as well as what each concentration may be used for.

Did you know that most cologne’s and perfumes are comprised mainly of alcohol? In fact, most of the fragrances that you see in any shop will only be comprised of 4-10% of actual scented compounds. Of course this varies depending on the perfume that you look at. The rest of the 86-90% of the bottle is made up of alcohol and water.

Some fragrances actually have a lower concentration of scented compounds, and some have more. This is where the commonly used EDP, EDT, and EDC come into play. Let’s take a look at what these mean.

Perfume – Also known as Perfume extract, ‘Perfume’ is the most concentrated and smoothest of the four types. Typically made up of a 20-40% concentration of scented compounds, perfume is definitely the most expensive to buy.

Eau de Parfum – EDP is typically made up of an 8-16% concentration of scented compounds. EDP is probably the most common type of concentration you will see at the store. An EDP scent will usually fade after four hours, but the base notes can linger for a 24 hour period. Fragrances with an EDP concentration are perfect if you need an all day scent

Eau de Toilette – EDT is another very common concentration found in many fragrances. EDT is typically made up of a 4-8% concentration of scented compounds. Some people find that some EDT perfumes last a long while, but generally these are better left for night time use where the scent isn’t needed for as long.

Eau de Cologne – EDC isn’t commonly found in any fragrances anymore. It doesn’t last that long, and is typically only made with a 2-4% concentration of scented compounds.

Now you will know what all those fancy French names are on the side of your favorite mens cologne bottle. Whether you need a longer duration scent for work, or something a little shorter for the clubs, you are now one step ahead of the crowd!

Fragrantly Fun Girl Perfume

Fragrantly Fun Girl Perfume
By David Swanson

Staying beautiful can be lots of work! In addition to the usual makeup, hair, and skin, perfume is another essential element of beauty. Perfume has been used among women for a long time. Yet, it is becoming more and more common for girls, preteens, and adolescents to wear perfume as well. The trend of wearing perfume is on the rise-the only question now is what kind to wear!

Too Many Types

There are four basic fragrance families in which fragrances can be classified. These groups include: fresh, floral, oriental, and woody perfumes. Preference for a certain group or family is usually determined by the wearer's personality.

Fresh perfumes are often worn by girls who are playful and energetic. Typically, these fragrances are made from ingredients such as ice, citrus, green plants, and water. Common scents that fall into this category are Green Tea Eau de Toilette by L'Occitane and Clean Eau de Parfum by Dlish. Many people like fresh perfumes because they often times do not actually make you smell like you are wearing a heavy scent.

Another group that fragrances fall under is floral. Floral scents are considered the most popular out of all the different perfume families. People who wear floral scents, which are comprised of gardenia, rose, and jasmine, are perceived as feminine, elegant, and romantic. Amor Amor by Cacharel and Sheer Veil by Vera Wang are two floral scents that are delicate and romantic.

Oriental girl perfumes are described as being warm, luminous, and rich; the women who wear them are regal and classy. Oriental girl perfumes often consist of a distinct ingredient, such as nutmeg, mixed with a floral or woody scent. Fantasy by Britney Spears and Lolita Lempicka by Lolita Lempicka are favorite oriental scents.

The last fragrance group is the woody scents. These scents are soothing and nurturing. Women who wear woody scents, which contain ingredients such as tobacco and cedar wood, are seen as being composed, calm, and full of wisdom. People who are looking for woody fragrances might want to consider Prada by Prada or Miss Dior Cherie by Dior.

Personality Profile

What perfume you choose says a lot about your personality and who you are. Before making a purchase, consider what impression you want to give. Do you want to come across as confident and appealing? How about bouncy and on-the-go? You might be looking to imply intelligence and wisdom. First impressions are important to consider when making your purchase.

Difficult Decisions

Choosing your signature scent might sound like an easy task, but it is more difficult than it sounds. Your choice will reflect who you are-so choose wisely!

Why Do So Many Women's Perfumes Come Out Of France?

Why Do So Many Women's Perfumes Come Out Of France?
By Gregg Hall

It sure seems like nearly every quality women's perfume comes from France, which has been the center of the fragrance industry for over 300 years. The actual beginnings of using fragrance have different origin though.

History shows us that it is actually Egypt that birthed the use of fragrances with them being used in rituals, as incense, and in lotions and ointments as far back as 3500 years ago, a few hundred years after that the women of Egypt were using certain scents for their cosmetic and aphrodisiac qualities.

Getting back to our story, France began expanding into the perfume industry in the 1600's by first offering perfumed gloves. It seems that ladies didn't like the way that leather gloves made their hands smell so they were perfumed. It was so popular that perfume makers and glove makers joined together to market them.

Within a century or so the use of fragrances had advanced to the point that they were used by themselves on a large scale and the invention of the eau de cologne using citrus and spices caused a virtual revolution in the fledgling industry. Along with the topical applications these early scents were even combined with wine and used as a mouthwash.

Believe it or not the fragrance industry, especially in France has never seen a decline. The statistics of usage are astounding with nearly all women using some kind of perfume and half of the men! Every year sees at least a hundred new perfume scents brought to market in France and the cost of bringing these products out isn't cheap, it can be as much as twenty million dollars. Add to that the fact that a fragrance it not even considered to be successful unless it does over $200 million in sales.

The exact geo center of the world's fragrance market can probably be narrowed down to the city of Grassed near Cannes. This is where the industry developed from the early partnership with the glove makers, a fad that didn't last, to now being the center for perfume making. Most perfume makers today use more chemicals and synthetics to make their fragrances but the flowers that grow here in Grassed are where they draw their inspiration.

The area employs over two thousand people in the fragrance industry and is responsible for over a half billion dollars in sales annually, making up half of the entire French perfume market. No wonder they are known all over the world for fine perfume.

Why You Should Know What Fragrance Category Your Perfume Is From

Why You Should Know What Fragrance Category Your Perfume Is From
By Gregg Hall

When thinking of your favorite fragrances, have you ever wondered exactly how they are categorized? Tradition states that every fragrance belongs to one specific group or family. Even though they have different names, there are six basic categories of perfumes. The categories are:

Sweet or Floral
Clean or Sporty
Natural or Green
Oils and Musks
Woody and Chypre
Spicy and Oriental

Many people often find and stick with one specific fragrance, but others like to mix it up and base the fragrance they wear on the mood they are in that day, some even change it with the current season. Furthermore, age often is found to greatly affect the choice of fragrance. As a woman ages, the choice of fragrance matures at the same time.

Let us talk a little about the different families of fragrances. The sweet or floral family is perhaps the most popular of them all and is derived from a variety of flowers. These types are generally view as youthful and are worn by young women or women who are playful. Some examples of fragrances within this family are Curious, Chanel no 22, Joy, Pleasures, Safari for Women, and L'Air Du Temps.

In the clean and sporty family, this is generally the reminder of a smell when you first leave the shower and generally smells comparable to soap. Typically, these make perfect gifts for those that are athletic in nature. Some examples of this type include, Alliage, Cashmere Mist, Polo for Women, Lily Chic, and Tommy Girl.

The fragrance of natural or green is a down to earth and fresh type of scent, perfect for those who like to feel natural and real. A few examples include Escape for Women, London, Chanel No.5, Truth for Women, Poison, and White Diamonds.

Oils and musks are suggestive, sexy, and strong scents. Generally used when a person wants to communicate certain things to their lover. It is deemed the most powerful among oil perfumes. Some examples are Sun, Moon, and Stars, O Oui, Caleche, Shalimar, and L'Aminant.

In the chypre and woody family, it is generally compared to earthy things. It combines scents of earth and floral perfect for those that love being in nature and the outdoors. Some examples include Miss Doir, Envy, Chanel No. 19, and Romance.

Finally, in the family of spicy and oriental, this mixes the scents of vanilla, animals, woods, and flowers together. It is very exotic and enjoyed most by women who is bold, strong, and radiant. Some examples include, Youth Dew, Obsession, Organza, Opium, and Still.

The Allure of Designer Perfume

The Allure of Designer Perfume
By Ursula Mclean

Women want to always feel their best, whether they are out for an elegant dinner or at a backyard barbecue. Many women are turning to designer perfume, clothing and accessories in order to be on "top of their game". This is because designers are continually aware of current fashion trends. At any given moment, they know what is in style and they create beautiful quality clothing that makes a woman feel beautiful and feminine. Unlike designer clothing, designer perfume is not seen, but it is still appreciated as a cut above the rest.

Why Choose Designer Perfume?

Many women are under the assumption that since perfume cannot be seen, the perfume manufacturer is of little importance. This could not be further from the truth. Much time goes into creating each individual scent.

Designer perfumes are going to be made of the finest ingredients and will be tested repeatedly until the formula is nothing short of perfection. When purchasing a designer perfume, a woman can feel confident knowing that her preferred designer scent is going to last and not fade or smell like alcohol as the day progresses. This is a very important consideration when choosing the right perfume. Will it last all day and still have the same high quality scent as it did when it was first applied? That is the major difference between designer perfume and those of sub-standard quality.

Choose the Perfect Perfume

Choosing the right perfume is not simply purchasing a particular scent made by a favorite designer. Just because their clothing looks fabulous, does not mean that their scent will be complementary.

Every woman has a unique body chemistry. The same perfume will not smell alike on two different people. Just because a woman's favorite designer has a scent that smells wonderful on a friend, does not necessarily mean that the same scent will have the same pleasing affect on her. This is why it is imperative that a woman auditions a scent before making a purchase. It could be a costly mistake to discover too late that a new designer perfume is not the right scent. It is easy to go to a department or designer store and try samples of various perfumes. A small spray on the inner wrist is the best way to test each perfume.

Where to Purchase Designer Perfume

Obviously, designers will sell their perfume at their store. Other specialty and department stores will also carry these perfumes. However, purchasing from one of these stores is likely to leave a small dent in someone's wallet. When paying retail for a designer label, people are paying for the "name" as well as the perfume itself. It is possible to find these designer label perfumes at a deep discount from the original retail price.

The best place to find these designer scents, at a fraction of the retail price, is through the Internet. There are web sites that are able to sell these at a percentage of the cost. This is due to buying in bulk and taking a smaller percentage of the profit than the larger stores. The fact that they do not have to pay for a store, storage space or the overhead of large department stores helps to keep the cost low. An added benefit is there are no advertising costs. This is taken care of by the designer.

There is absolutely no reason to go to a retail store and pay retail price for a designer perfume. The exact same scent, by the same designer, can be purchased on the Internet at a fraction of the cost. A substantial savings is literally a mouse click away.

Designer perfume is always going to be head and shoulders above its competition. It will always be in high demand as it makes a woman feel special. Of course, she deserves only the very best!

Guys lets face it, we don’t have a clue when it comes to buying perfume. We know we like it, that’s about it. If your significant other wears a perfume you go wild about you are going to want to make sure she has plenty of it. You’re not going to get her what your Mother wears, that would be weird on a number of levels!

As a novice perfume buyer you can no longer walk into your local department store and say “give me that perfume by such and such”. Most designers today have created mega-brands around their names that include 5, 10, 15 different fragrances to make perfume buying impossible for the un-initiated.

Perfume Gift Sets

Fragrance marketers have gotten smart. They know that for the most part their products are purchased not by the intended user, but by someone who they must walk down the entire road of the perfume buying process. And actually guys we don’t mind right? There is nothing more uneasy than standing at the perfume counter smelling a cotton stick with perfume on it.

Introduce the perfume gift set-Hopefully your significant other is into the latest and greatest scent from their favorite fragrance maker. Now all you have to do is pick up a gift box. These usually contain two to three other add-on items including the perfume you intended to buy. Pricing is reasonable as the marketers know that since it is not coming with a big screen TV. then they need to create a perceived value to buy it.

Some perfume gifts may only be available at that time of year. There may also be special limited editions available too.

A good example of an excellent gift set is Elizabeth Arden’s Red Door gift set. This includes an eau de toilette spray, body lotion and a cosmetic bag.

Does The Price Of Your Perfume Add Up To Health Issues?

Does The Price Of Your Perfume Add Up To Health Issues?
By Gregg Hall

Almost everything made today includes some kind of fragrance. It is in soaps, cleaning products, laundry detergent, deodorants, and more. I could list a lot more but then all we would have would be a list. We utilize perfume for air freshener, on our own bodies and on the bodies of our pets. The problem with all of this is that the proliferation of all of these chemicals could be contributing to making you feel ill.

The use of fragrances is nothing new, they have been used for centuries dating to biblical times but it is only now that we have begun to see some of the issues arising from the use of perfume. One of the main reasons for this, I think, is that throughout the ages fragrances were created from natural ingredients while now the vest majority of scents on the market are made from chemicals which leave a toxic vapor trail.

The reason for making the fragrances with synthetics is simple; it is much cheaper and faster to produce once they have the formula down. Some of the chemicals used like petroleum are proven and well documented to contain dangerous toxins that can cause health issues from birth defects to disorders of the nervous system, and even cancer.

The fragrance industry that uses these chemicals is completely unregulated because they are not thought to be producing anything dangerous. They don't have to supply the FDA with any date or information of testing, safety, or their formulas. Some people are more sensitive to these chemicals than others, so while it may not affect you it could very well be harming someone in your home. For people who are highly allergic to some of these chemicals they don't have to smell them, it can just be laundry soap that has an allergen that causes them to break out in a rash when they put on a freshly laundered piece of clothing.

Some are so hyper sensitive to certain perfumes that just one sniff of the scent can cause shortness of breath, rapid breathing and heart beat and other reactions. Some other very common signs of someone who is highly allergic are sore throat, sneezing, nausea, and watery eyes. In many cases if the chemical is absorbed through the skin it has an even more powerful impact.

There are many establishments today that are beginning to implement fragrance free policies due to the allergic reactions that are being seen. Not only do the ask people not to wear any scented products but they also use only unscented cleaning products for their janitorial services. As more and more people display reactions to the chemicals we will see companies all across the country following suit with similar policies.

How To Easily Choose The Right Perfume For Your Lady

How To Easily Choose The Right Perfume For Your Lady
By Gregg Hall

Choosing the right perfume can be difficult and because it is also considered an intimate gift buying the wrong perfume can backfire on you and get you the opposite result of that which you hoped for.

The first thing you need to do is do some homework, meaning research. Look at your lady's perfume bottles, the ones that are nearly empty will be her favorites. If there is one there that is nearly full chances are she doesn't wear it often or doesn't like it. Hint around and ask her what types of fragrances she likes and dislikes.

Humans are very sensory oriented and our sense of smell is no different. Certain perfumes can elicit strong reactions in both the wearer and the person reacting to the scent. Perfumes are made not only to attract but to also relax someone. If you aren't totally sure what kind of perfume to buy you can always play it safe and get something in the aromatherapy line. If you go this route, bear in mind that vanilla scents are considered to relax and a peppermint or lemon scent will be more stimulating.

Buying a woman's perfume for your wife or girlfriend is serious business. They expect you to know what they like, so you better know. This is your chance to show that you really do pay attention and that you know what she likes and doesn't like. If you get it right you will get rewarded way beyond the small bottle of perfume, get it wrong and you'll be accused of buying something your old girlfriend liked!

Other than the snooping I already mentioned, if you are buying the gift for a special occasion such as Christmas or Valentines Day you can be a little more upfront about asking than if you were just trying to surprise her. Take a look at her wish list, if she has perfume on the list ask her what types she likes. As soon as you can go write it down so you don't forget, you know how we men are.

You should be very sure of your selection when you buy the perfume for your lady so make sure you have done your research so that you don't end up upsetting her instead of thrilling her. Remember, this is just like buying lingerie it isn't about what you like it is about what she likes! She is the one that will be wearing it to school or work and therefore it's for her not you. But, if you get it right she will think of you every time someone compliments her on her fragrance and that my friend, is priceless.

Why The Best Fragrances Come Straight From Flowers

Why The Best Fragrances Come Straight From Flowers
By Gregg Hall

Surely, you have heard the popular phrase, "Stop and smell the roses", typically this means you should take it easy, slow down, and enjoy the pleasures in life before they pass you by. When you are walking through a flower garden or someone gives you a beautiful bouquet of flowers, what is the first thing you do? Unconsciously without even being aware of it, you smell them. Many of us love the smell of flowers and when we purchase our own flowers, we do so because we enjoy the smell. This is how perfume developers entice us to buy their particular fragrances; by using the flower smells we love the most.

Perhaps, you didn't know, but flowers are a very important aspect in any fragrance. Perfumes are developed using many different sources such as bark, fruits, grasses, herbs, tobacco, wood, leather, chocolate, and resins. While perfumes are made of any mixture of the preceding things, the fragrance is formed by use of a flower. Every flower type has a scent to its own and can affect perfumes in different manners. To get technical, one flower can give out many different smells and aromas. A good example of this is the rose, while in general roses typically smell the exact same, the different varieties each have a unique smell, even if it various only slightly from the others.

Because flowers come from many different areas of the world, there are many factors that go along in creating fragrances and perfumes, with the unique scent that each has. Some factors that affect fragrances include alkalinity, soil acidity, pollution, pesticides, and weather, all effect how any particular flower will smell. Using roses again as an example, they are grown all over the world in the United States, Bulgaria, and France, each of these areas are well known for producing roses specifically for use in various perfumes. Some flowers such as the ylang-ylang, grown in Southeast Asia, can only be grown in specific areas of the world.

When a manufacturer creates specific fragrances, it isolates the flowers essential oils. The essential oils are what gives each flower and plant their wonderful smell. There are many different flowers used in the production of fragrances and perfumes, some of the most used included orange flowers, jasmine, roses, and ylang-ylang.

Find a favorite flower of yours when determining which fragrance is right for you. Research on fragrances is fun, because all you have to do is follow your nose to your favorite.

Selecting the Right Perfume

Selecting the Right Perfume
By Michael Russell

If you have decided to purchase perfume for yourself or for someone else as a gift, you will find that it may be difficult to decide which perfume to choose. With so many different varieties of perfumes on the market, just how are you supposed to select the right one? Below, you will find the answer.

First, if cost is a big consideration when you are purchasing perfume, then you may want to predetermine how much you are going to spend before you start shopping. Some brands can be pretty pricey and if you are on a budget, you will want to remain within the confines of your spending limit.

Next, you will need to determine if you want to purchase a perfume that has a light or a heavy scent. If you are buying for yourself, this task is far easier than if you are purchasing perfume for someone else. Therefore, finding out in advance what perfume a person prefers is your best option. For instance, if your friend likes wearing musk, then look for musk when you are purchasing perfume and if your friend or loved one likes earthy scents, then look for an earthy scent when you shop.

Next, there is actually a trick to smelling perfume. Have you ever noticed that when you smell perfume from the bottle and then you smell it on your wrist it does not ever smell the same? That's because perfumes react with your body chemicals. So, you will want to purchase a perfume that is not only pleasing to the nose when you open the bottle, but one that is pleasing when it reacts to skin contact. Also, once you have applied the perfume to your wrist, wait a few seconds as the strong odor will dissipate and will leave you with the scent that the perfume is meant to provide.

It is not a wise idea to purchase perfume just because the bottle is pretty. Unless you truly do not care what is inside the bottle and you only want the bottle, you really should take a few moments to test out what's inside. You may find that the perfume inside your gorgeous bottle smells absolutely atrocious or that it does not suit your personality at all.

Finally, if you decide to purchase perfumes online you should email the company to send you a variety of samples before you make your purchases. Again, a website can tell you absolutely nothing about what a perfume smells like. Just because the advertisement says that the perfume has a lovely musk scent, it doesn't mean that you will think the scent is lovely when you receive your package. Therefore, unless you are familiar with a perfume product, refrain from shopping for perfumes online until you have had an opportunity to sample the product.

How To Distinguish The Different Types Of Woman's Perfume

How To Distinguish The Different Types Of Woman's Perfume
By Kellie Lynne

Most people do not have much knowledge about or understand the different kinds of woman's perfume being offered that provide different fragrances that enhance different body chemistry. By learning about these different kinds of woman's perfume, you can purchase and wear fragrances that are more suitable for you and will better provide the benefits you are seeking from your perfume purchase. A little bit of knowledge will not only benefit the perfume buyer, but also the perfume wearer.

A woman's perfume basically breaks down to a core ingredient used to achieve a desired scent. The different smells that are created by the perfume will determine whether the scent is going to be an asset or a possible detriment to the individual wearer. Perfumes are defined by the terms floral, fougere, fresh, oriental, and woody. The reason that perfumes are given these labels is due to the ingredients by which they are created. These ingredients will determine a specific perfumes scent. A woody perfume would be made by using certain oils and barks of different woods, a fresh scent could be a natural smell or possibly a citrus, while a floral will contain the scent of flowers. Understanding the breakdown in each fragrance will help you choose which type of women's perfume you want, as well as one that blends with your individual body chemistry to create a pleasing scent.

The strongest and most expensive kind of woman's perfume is the true perfume. Someone wearing a true perfume has a rather expensive tiny bottle of the most powerful concentration of that specific scent. True perfume will contain scented oils concentrated to a minimum of twenty percent. Using a true perfume will give you the entire essence of that particular fragrance while offering an aroma that is unmistakable.

Most people do not need the power of a true perfume for daily use. A less costly and smaller concentration is entirely appropriate for most days. The eau de cologne, eau de perfume, and eau de toilette all contain a smaller and less powerful concentration of oils. All of these can be purchased less expensively and in greater quantities making them a much more affordable kind of woman's perfume.

For someone wanting to learn more about woman's perfume, investing the necessary time to educate yourself about the differing varieties and strengths will be useful to you. You should be able to quickly discover what the smell of a fragrance will be, by learning about the most popular brands and defining their group of scents. Obviously some scents can be determined quicker than others, floral's in particular. Classic scents that are well known to seasoned professionals may still need to be investigated by someone new to the perfume industry to determine the scents category.

Perfumes or How to Wear a Scent That Suits You

Perfumes or How to Wear a Scent That Suits You
By Michael Rad

Choosing a perfume is not that easy as one might think it is. You cannot simply choose a perfume that is being advertised or a perfume that your friend wears and wear it. It might not be the thing you need. A good perfume for you is the one that matches your personality and compliments your personal scent. Did you know that a perfume feels differently on different people? For instance, a perfume that feels nice on a person, might feel awful on another, as it mixes with the natural scent of each person giving a unique combination of scent, individual to each.

When it comes to choosing a perfume you have a great deal of aromas to contemplate: Floral, Oriental, Chypre, Green Marine, oriental and Fruit. These are combined and each perfume manufacturer adds some secret ingredients that make the perfume long lasting. The perfume has a concentration of alcohol that makes the scent last plus around 25% of essential oils. The perfumes also contain a fixative and the main ingredients which may be diverse plants: bay leaf, cardamom, eucalyptus, frankincense, geranium, iris, jasmine, lavender, lemon, lily, orange, patchouli, pine, raspberry, rose, sandalwood, vanilla, violet and ylang-ylang, bergamot, cedar wood, gardenia, magnolia and others. There are also animal scents used in the combination. These may be: male musk deer, ambergris, civet etc. However, when picking out a perfume these components should not be essential.

An important point is to feel the scent on your skin. Applying a bit of perfume on the back of your wrist and waiting for a few minutes will give you the first level of scent. If you like it, this is a good thing. Then, wait for half a day and see the mid level of scents, at the end of the day, you will be able to feel the core components of the perfume, so if you still like it, this means that you have found the right perfume for you. Don't buy the perfume without having worn it for one day beforehand.

Also, a good smelling perfume is not suitable for all occasions: you have to have at least two perfumes: one for casual use and one for evenings and special events. Casual perfumes for every day use are usually fresh perfumes, while evening perfumes contain floral scents and are heavier. And don't forget to check out the offer from the numerous perfume producers: Kenzo, Calvin Klein, Channel, Christian Lacroix, Guerlain, Lancome, Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Estee Lauder, Cacharel and lots others.

How Perfume Can Attract You

How Perfume Can Attract You
By Zola Mathe

Perfume fillers generally use ethyl alcohol, sometimes called ethanol. Your body considers ethanol to be a poison and many people who think they are allergic to perfume are actually allergic to the alcohol in the perfume . Perfume fillers generally use ethyl alcohol, sometimes called ethanol. Making your perfume is not that difficult to make.

Fragrance

The only thing that is certain about fragrance preference is that it can chance with time. Your fragrance will last, and last, and last. The category a fragrance belongs to is defined by how much of the scent or aromatic compound is used in the product. This also plays a factor in determining the price as the higher the concentration of scent the more expensive the fragrance will be. The design house of Yves Saint Laurent introduced Paris perfume for women in 1983. Paris fragrance is very invigorating and is very innocent in nature. The only thing that is certain about fragrance preference is that it can chance with time. Some noteworthy examples of floral fragrance are Chanel No.

Women

Some interesting designs in bottles for women are Shi by Alfred Sung, Prada, Kingdom by Alexander Mcqueen Parfums. There may not be another scent out there that has so many spices that mingle so brilliantly in concert, producing a charming excitement. Unlike other feminine fragrances, Opium for women is not floral at all, which makes it so unique and distinctive.Perfumery is now a world conglomeration and serves as a major division of the world fashion industry. It is common practice when buying a perfume is to visit the fragrance counter and spray different scents on different parts of your body so you can compare them. If you are giving it away, you will want to make the packaging nice for a good presentation. However, do not forget that perfume is sensitive to heat, light and oxygen so that you should be guided accordingly. The perfume bottles are small and very beautiful designed to represent the personality of the fragrance and the designer. Another great way to find discount women’s perfume is to buy gift baskets instead of just buying a bottle of your favorite scent. Keep in mind that a perfume allergy is not limited to the woman who wears it. Celebrity perfume is one of the top selling types of perfume.

Wear Perfume Like a Pro!

Wear Perfume Like a Pro!
By Michele Webb

Here a few simple tips, from some of the pro’s in the fashion and modeling industry on how to apply your perfume so that it lasts all day!

1. Put It On Early. Give your perfume time to fully develop by applying it at least an hour before going out to give the fragrance time to blend with your own skin’s oils.

2. Layer the Fragrances. Use soaps and creams in the same scent as your perfume. If worn together the fragrance will last twice as long! Most stores will sell a complete line of products, including soaps, creams, and different moisturizers, in the same fragrance(s).

3. Seal the Scent. If you are using a scented moisturizer in addition to the perfume, apply the perfume first. This seals the alcohol in closer to your skin and as it evaporates the cream will “trap” the essence of the perfume fragrance.

4. Start With Your Feet. If you are wearing some cute strappy sandals, heels or open shoes, put a little perfume on the soles of your feet. As you walk, the friction will warm your feet and the scent will float upward. (Note: this does not work for closed shoes.)

Watch Your Jewelry. Be careful to not apply your perfume on or near costume jewelry. The alcohol in it can strip off the coating, or an oily build-up could be left on the jewelry. Put your jewelry on after you’ve applied all your perfume(s).

Perfumes May Be Cheaper Online

Perfumes May Be Cheaper Online
By Michael Rad

Choosing the right perfume is essential in defining your personality. Thanks to the myriad manufacturers, there are many sorts of perfumes that you can try and see if they compliment your personality.

The world of aromas is complex and they inspired the perfume producers to the best combinations that are available on the market. The perfume categories are numerous: Floral, Oriental, Chypre, Green Marine, Floriental and Fruit. You probably have some favorite scents, so when you want to choose a perfume, these favorite scents can be your guide. Typical plants used to make scents consist of bay leaf, bergamot, cardamom, cedar wood, eucalyptus, frankincense, gardenia, geranium, iris, jasmine, lavender, lemon, lilac, lily, magnolia, moss, orange, patchouli, pine, raspberry, rose, sandalwood, vanilla, violet and ylang-ylang and the list could continue endlessly. The animal scents used are musk, which is from the male musk deer, ambergris, civet and others. The perfumes are made of around 75% of denatured ethyl alcohol and the rest is essential oils. The perfumes are the most concentrated in essential oils, more than the eau the parfum or the eau de toilette or the eau de cologne. After all the components were added to the mixture, a fixative is added, which can maintain the odor for many hours on end.

When you want to choose a perfume, you have to apply it on a part of your body where the blood stream is abundant, such as the wrist or the neck. You must know that each perfume smells differently on each individual, because it mixes with your natural scent. So, if you like the smell of a perfume on someone, it doesn’t mean it will smell the same on you. Also, when you apply the perfume, you will only be able to smell the first layer of the scent. So, make sure you wear the perfume for a day, to be able to feel all the other layers of fragrance as well. Only after that will you be able to tell if you like the perfume or not.

And remember, the perfume that is the hottest or is most advertised is not necessarily your perfume, so make sure you don’t jump on the most popular perfumes on the market. Buy a perfume that suits you and you will feel comfortable in your pleasant smelling skin.

The History of Perfume

The History of Perfume
By Terrie Tulane

The history of perfume goes back to Egypt, although it was prevalent in East Asia as well. Early perfumes were based on incense, not chemicals, so aromas were passed around through fumes. The Roman and Islamic cultures further refined the harvesting and manufacturing of perfumery processes to include other aromatic ingredients.

Thus, the ancient Islamic culture marked the history of modern perfumery with the introduction of spices and herbs. Fragrances and other exotic substances, such as Jasmine and Citruses, were adapted to be harvested in climates outside of their indigenous Asia.

The extraction of fragrances was perfected through steam distillation. In turn, the Islamic cultural production of fragrances and distillation technology inspired the scientific communities of western culture during the fourteenth century, especially in France, which brought further cultivation of these raw materials and introduced chemical-based perfume.

Modern innovation in the history of perfume can be credited to the West, but the cultural conceptualization still belonged to Islam: "The taking of a bath on Friday is compulsory for every male Muslim who has attained the age of puberty… [and then] the using of perfume if it is available." (a claim made by The Prophet Mohammed, which is also recorded in Sahih Bukhari).

The use of spiced and fragranced perfume during the Renaissance was exclusive to the royalty and wealthy for the purpose of covering body odors related to their sanitary habits. Thus, perfumery as an industry was established in the West. This is where the history of perfume denotes the association of perfume with the upper-class.

It wasn’t until the eighteenth century that the Grasse region of France harvested aromatic plants to accommodate the growing demand for fragranced and spiced perfumes. Perfumery flourished! The world history of perfume came to a head. France is still the perfume center of modern-day Europe, which trades with the United States.

The latter, however, has established its own perfume industry and trades with the rest of the world. Perfumery is now a world conglomeration and serves as a major division of the world fashion industry. The history of perfume is now globally involved.

Perfumes have come a long way and are going strong. New popular brands have emerged such as BCBG perfume product line. More information can be found at http://www.perfumearts.com/

Perfume And It's Effect

Perfume And It's Effect
By Tom Turner

The discovery that fragrance could be used in different ways, dates back a long time ago in Egypt. It was introduced into Europe in the 14th century, but it wasn't until the 18th century that France discovered perfume, and even today are the leaders in the industry. Perfume is used in almost everything, and comes in a variety of fragrances. Many different cultures consider perfume to be romantic and sensual, and there are many different manufacturers of this industry that highlight on this aspect. We will take a look at perfume and it's effect on the marketing industry in this article.

Everyone likes to look and feel beautiful. Perfume is a way of making you feel beautiful. Fragrance and its many forms, can control some of our senses. If we know we smell good, we can feel pretty good too; especially if someone gives you a compliment on how nice you smell. We have the ability to set the mood with perfume. If you are looking for that romantic feeling, then candles are not the only thing you need. Fragrance plays a big part in accomplishing your goal. It has the ability to stimulate the romantic feeling and perfume can create a sensual atmosphere.

You can find all kinds of toiletries today that have all kinds of perfume smells. Shampoo and conditioners are so numerous to choose from, that sometimes it is hard to decide which to choose. It often comes down to what the product smells like in making a decision. Even our deodorants can have an effect on our senses. You may change from something that works, to something new, just because of the perfume used in the product. They have body wash today that smells so good, you can hardly get home to use it. Perfume has taken over how we buy a product.

Perfume is a wonderful thing, but we also need to become aware of how it is being used in the retail of a product. Make sure the product you are purchasing works according to how they claim, and don't be swayed by the perfume it. I'm not saying not to buy something because it smells good, I'm saying, don't let your senses be fooled by the perfume and its effect.

Importance of Perfume

Importance of Perfume
By Tom Turner

We all like to smell good, in fact; we may try on a lot of perfumes before we find the one that fits our mood at the moment. It's true that fragrance can control our emotions. The importance of perfume has become wide spread, and it's found in about everything you buy now days. Commercials have become an important part of selling the importance of perfume. You may be watching an ad on air fresheners or dish soap, but they both have one thing in common, they smell nice and that is what they are selling. This article will talk about the importance of perfume and how it has affected the way we buy.

We have become so concerned with the way we smell, that you may have used a particular laundry soap for years because it not only worked, but smelled good. With all the competition on the importance of perfume, almost everyone has come on board, and you can now purchase laundry soap in different flavors. The selling point might not even be if the soap cleans the clothes, but the importance of perfume, has placed the emphasis on what it smells like.

We function from the importance of perfume. It is a known fact that perfume is known for its effect on our emotions. Different scents effect us differently. The importance of perfume can actually set the mood, not only in a romantic way, but in a peaceful way as well. There are some scents designed to produce a tranquil effect, a calming and soothing feeling, and then there are some that smell like the outdoors. The importance of perfume is detected everywhere we go and in about everything you buy.

Manufacturers have stepped up their campaigns on the importance of perfume as most of the ads today focus on what the product smells like, not so much as what it does. We can all fall prey to this discovery of the importance of perfume, if we aren't aware. Don't let your decision of what to buy, be led by the fragrance of the product. The importance of perfume may be important to a degree, but how well the product performs should be the main deciding factor. The Composition of Fragrance

The Composition of Fragrance
By Zackary Hayes

Perfume oils, or the "juice" of fragrance composition, are diluted with a suitable solvent to make the perfume more usable. This is done because undiluted oils either natural or synthetic contain high concentrations of volatile components that will likely result in allergic reactions and possibly injury when applied directly to skin or clothing. Dilutions of the fragrance oil can be done using solvents such as jojoba, fractionated coconut oil, and wax. The most common solvents for fragrance oil dilution is ethanol or a mixture of ethanol and water. The percent of perfume oil by volume in a perfume is listed as follows:

*

Perfume: 20%-40% Fragrance compounds

* Eau de parfum (EDP) : 10-30% Fragrance compounds

* Eau de toilette (EDT) : 5-20% Fragrance compounds

* Eau de cologne (EDC) : 2-3% Fragrance compounds.

As the percentage of fragrance compounds decreases, the intensity and longevity of the scent decrease. It should be noted that different perfumeries or perfume houses assign different amounts of oils to each of their fragrances. As such, although the oil concentration of a fragrance in eau de parfum (EDP) dilution will necessarily be higher than the same fragrance in eau de toilette (EDT) form, the same trends may not necessarily apply to different perfume compositions with different perfume houses. To further complicate things, some fragrances with the same product name but having a different concentration name may not only differ in their formulas, but actually use different perfume oil mixtures altogether. For instance, in order to make the EDT version of a fragrance brighter and fresher than its EDP, the EDT oil may be modified to contain slightly more top notes or less base notes. In some cases, words such as "extreme" or "concentrate" appended to fragrance names might indicate completely different fragrances that relate only because of a similar fragrance content.

History Of Perfume In Cyprus, Islamic Cultures, Western And England

History Of Perfume In Cyprus, Islamic Cultures, Western And England
By Cathy Rideg

Cyprus
The oldest perfume was discovered on the island of Cyprus. Excavations unearthed an enormous site that existed 4,000 years ago. These perfumes were scented with extracts of lavender, bay, rosemary, pine and/or coriander and they were kept in tiny translucent alabaster bottles. Archaeologists that discovered these scents believe that what they discovered was a perfume making factory to be able to produce perfume on an industrial scale.

They discovered at least 60 distilling stills, mixing bowls, funnels and perfume bottles that were in perfect condition. They were preserved due to an earthquake around 1850BC.

These findings are now on display at the Capitoline Museum in Rome and in addition four of the perfumes have been recreated.

Islamic
Contributions from Islamic Cultures helped in the development of perfecting fragrances from steam distillation and the introduction of raw ingredients. Both ingredients significantly influenced the western perfumery developments in particularly chemistry. The chemistry knowledge is a very important procedure into the making of perfume due to careful mixing of chemicals.

Western
France became European centre of perfume and cosmetic manufacturing. Perfume was primarily used by the elite, wealthy and royalty to disguise body odors. Perfume was a huge success in the 17th Century. In the 18th Century King Louis demanded different fragrances which could be use on skin, clothing and furniture. France started to grow aromatic plants which would provide the raw materials for perfumes.

England
Perfume was at the highest peak in England during the time of Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth 1. Queen Elizabeth could not tolerate any bad smells and it was requested that all places she resided at, visited where scented at all times. In the 19th century perfume underwent a profound change. Modern chemistry and development laid new foundations of perfumery as we know it today.

The Grandeur of Perfume Oils

The Grandeur of Perfume Oils
By Jade Honeywell

Perfume oils are used around the world. Essentially, they are concentrated forms of perfume. People have been making fragrances for centuries. Perfume oils just provide a powerful aroma within the convenience of a tiny bottle, perfect for your purse or fashion handbag.

Perfume oil can come in different varieties, ingredient wise. One thing people enjoy the most about these wonderful liquids is the high amount of aromatic compounds. The more aromatic the perfume oil the longer and stronger the scent will be.

Perfume oils provide the highest concentration of aromatic compounds when compared to other fragrance choices. You will find many typical perfume oils contain 20 - 40% of pure aromatic compounds, while a typical cologne carries only 2% - 5%.

It's clear perfume oil is the best choice for any time you want your fragrance to last after you put it on. It can sometimes be annoying when you spend a lot of money on a perfume and it just doesn't seem to last for any time at all. With perfume oil this problem is completely eliminated. Not only will the scent generally be stronger depending on what kind of oil you use, but you'll also be able to actually enjoy it through the day.

When you're looking to purchase perfume oil it's always best to get a feel for the selection available to you. There are many different perfumeries across the world that make perfume oil. The ingredients and intensity of the oil can vary from perfume house to perfume house. Try a few to see which one suits you best. The more you try then the closer you will be to that perfect fragrance that you've been looking for.

When it comes to ingredients, make sure you check them closely so that you can get an idea of what kind of perfume oil it is. Sometimes the ingredients won't be shown. In this case, you'll have to be the judge as to whether you still want to go with it or not. For example, some products have been known to be listed as aromatherapy products but do not have true aromatherapy ingredients.

Perfume oil is the perfect solution for someone who doesn't want to have to keep re-applying fragrances all the time. The concentrated nature of perfume oil gives it wonderful, long-lasting benefits.
