Pheromone Cologne

Pheromone Cologne

Does pheromone cologne really work? Do a search on pheromones on the internet and you will soon find yourself literally bombarded with ads for perfumes and colognes claiming they are made with real human pheromones and will make you downright irresistible to the opposite (or even the same) sex. Is this just the snake oil of the 21st century?

Most pheromone cologne sites come with testimonials from real users and, even better, headlines from such established news entities as CNN and Time Magazine. Make no mistake, these headlines are real, from actual stories covering scientific research that has concluded the existence of human pheromones. But much like a movie review that takes a quote out of context to make it seem like the reviewer raved about the movie when he actually panned it, these headlines and excerpts don’t tell the whole story.

Yes, evidence suggests that human pheromones are for real. And yes, some participants in studies have claimed that using pheromone cologne has increased their sexual attractiveness. But that doesn’t by any means guarantee that these things are for real. In the first place, unless the person doing the testimonial is someone who has never attracted another human being in his or her life and now attracts them only when using the cologne, there could be any number of reasons why someone finds them attractive. In fact, it very well could be something as simple as an increase in confidence due to the confidence that the pheremone cologne will actually work.

Self-confidence is better than any bottled cologne or perfume, whether it is a pheromone cologne or not. A person who enters a crowded room sure of himself or herself will immediately be recognized and singled out. Even the most beautiful girl or handsome man can disappear if he or she is experiencing problems with self-esteem.

It would be terrific if all it took to make oneself attractive to the opposite sex was a cologne. Which brings up the really big problem with the whole concept of pheromone cologne. The makers of these things promise that they are made with actual sex hormones. Well, if you are a human being, guess what? You are already producing the hormones being used in these colognes. And since there is no guarantee that the bottled hormones are going to be any more effective than the ones you were born with, why pay for it?

The very fact that so many pheromone colognes are on the market points to a problem with their claims. After all, if everybody was buying their products, wouldn’t the average nightclub become a scene of sexual frenzy and confusion? In the animal kingdom, pheromones are used sexually to entice potential mates. Evolution tells us that those with the most effective scents have successfully propagated while those with less strong scents have died off. Hence, pheromones should be just as individualized as faces. A one size fits all approach doesn’t work with other methods of sexual attractiveness, why should it work with pheromones? Pheromone cologne probably won’t hurt, and it might even help with your confidence. But don’t expect miracles.
